Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

PSYO/NESC 3133 (Research Methods in Memory) examines human memory from the perspective of cognitive psychology and, to a lesser extent, cognitive neuroscience. Material emphasizes cognitive approaches to the study of memory, with an explicit focus on empirical research methods, data, and interpretation of results.

The Part-Time Academic will be responsible for teaching a 3000-level lab course, Research Methods in Memory (PSYO/NESC 3133.03). This course fulfills a laboratory credit; as such, it must include lessons and assessment incorporating experimental research methods and data interpretation. The class is being offered in an online, asynchronous format, with course content and assessment delivered through Dalhousie’s Brightspace learning management system. The anticipated enrolment is 25 students, and the course has support from a TA130.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include:

- Developing 12 weeks of content, including online lectures, readings, and assessments.
- Preparation and administration of online assessments (e.g., assignments; quizzes/exams).
- Grading assessments and providing timely feedback to students (in collaboration with the course TA).
- Offering approximately 2 hours per week for student consultation; responding to student emails in a timely manner.
- Providing course content (e.g., syllabus, notes, grades) on Brightspace, Dalhousie’s learning management system.




- Maintaining a record of all student grades (including grades for each assessment component) in Brightspace, and ensuring timely submission of final letter grades to the registrar’s office.

Teaching occasionally requires work after the formal end point of a course (for example, in cases where a student has extenuating circumstances or academic accommodations that require a deferred final exam). If such cases arise, the Part-Time Academic must facilitate tying up loose ends, either by completing the work themselves, or by providing the necessary materials for the department to complete the work on their behalf (e.g., answer keys; Brightspace access).

This position reports to the Chair of the Department.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

- Applicants must have a graduate degree in Psychology, Neuroscience or a closely related discipline, demonstrated teaching effectiveness, and research or teaching experience related to cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a closely related area. Specific expertise in the cognitive psychology and/or neuroscience of memory is preferred.
- Previous experience with Dalhousie’s learning management system, Brightspace, is considered an asset.
