Position Summary
The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting business decisions through timely financial analysis. In a food manufacturing environment, this role also manages inventory accounting, cost accounting, production reporting, and compliance with financial and regulatory requirements. The Accounting Manager partners closely with operations, procurement, production, and senior leadership to improve financial performance and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
· Manage the day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
· Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
· Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes.
· Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies.
· Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
Cost & Inventory Accounting
· Oversee inventory accounting and valuation for raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods.
· Monitor standard costs and analyze manufacturing variances, including labor, overhead, material usage, and production efficiencies.
· Support inventory cycle counts and physical inventory processes.
· Ensure accurate costing of manufactured products.
· Partner with production and operations to improve cost controls and profitability.
Budgeting & Financial Analysis
· Assist in preparing annual operating budgets and financial forecasts.
· Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to management.
· Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), including production costs,
gross margins, inventory turns, and waste.
· Prepare management reports highlighting operational and financial trends.
Compliance & Internal Controls
· Ensure compliance with IFRS and applicable tax regulations.
· Coordinate annual financial audits and support external auditors.
· Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets.
· Support compliance with food manufacturing regulatory requirements as they relate to financial reporting and inventory controls.
Payroll and Human Resources
· Manage the preparation of payroll for personnel
· Keep up-to-date on current HR trends, oversee HR delivery
· Manage employee records
· Ensure that the business is following labour standards and provincial legistlation
Leadership
· Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
· Assign workloads, review work for accuracy, and conduct performance evaluations.
· Promote continuous improvement within the accounting department.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
· CPA, CMA, or equivalent professional designation preferred.
Experience
· 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience.
· At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or management role.
· Manufacturing experience required; food manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
· Experience with cost accounting and inventory management.
Knowledge & Skills
· Strong knowledge of IFRS and financial reporting.
· Thorough understanding of manufacturing cost accounting.
· Experience with ERP systems in a manufacturing workplace.
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
· Excellent communication and leadership skills.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred Experience
· Standard costing and variance analysis.
· Inventory control and warehouse operations.
· Budget development and forecasting.
· ERP implementation or system optimization.
· Continuous improvement initiatives, including Lean manufacturing principles.
Salary
Based on experience
15% Bonus Eligible (based upon Personal Performance and Business Results
Schedule
This is a Manager Level position with Bonus Eligibility, additional hours and schedule flexibility will be required based upon the needs of the business.
Work Location
In Person, but will be temporarily remote until the new plant in Nisku, AB is ready in late 2026/early 2027. One week of in-person training in Saskatoon, SK will be required.
