Digital Nova Scotia is seeking engaged and community-minded leaders to join our Board of Directors. As the voice of Nova Scotia's tech sector, we bring together industry, academia, government and entrepreneurs to support the growth and success of our digital economy.
We welcome expressions of interest from individuals across Nova Scotia's tech community and encourage applications from people of diverse backgrounds, experiences, identities and perspectives. Strong boards are built on diverse voices, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and representative organization. Digital Nova Scotia's board of directors has committed itself to exceed the federal government's 50/30 challenge by having a board comprised of 50% women and 50% from equity-deserving groups.
About the role
As a member of the Board of Directors, you will help guide the strategic direction of Digital Nova Scotia, support strong governance practices and contribute to the continued growth and impact of the organization.
Board members act in the best interests of the organization and the broader tech community, bringing thoughtful leadership, informed decision-making and a commitment to collaboration.
Term of service
- Two-year term
- Eligible for one additional consecutive term
Time commitment
Approximately six hours per month, including:
- Board meetings
- Committee participation
- Meeting preparation
- Special events and organizational activities
Key responsibilities
Board members are expected to:
- Attend and actively participate in board meetings and committee work
- Contribute to strategic planning and organizational priorities
- Support sound governance, financial oversight, and risk management
- Review organizational performance against strategic goals and objectives
- Participate in the approval and monitoring of annual budgets
- Support the recruitment, evaluation, and succession planning of the CEO
- Uphold board policies, bylaws, and codes of conduct
- Act as ambassadors for Digital Nova Scotia within their qualified networks
- Help identify and recruit future board members
- Attend and participate in the Annual General Meeting
- Stay informed about issues and opportunities affecting Nova Scotia's tech sector
What we're looking for

- A strong connection to Nova Scotia's technology and innovation ecosystem
- Commitment to Digital Nova Scotia's mission and strategic priorities
- An interest in governance and organizational leadership
- Sound judgment and collaborative decision-making skills
- A willingness to learn and contribute
- The ability to commit the required time and energy to board service
Previous board experience is welcome but not required. As we balance the skills of our board of directors, we are particularly interested in those candidates with direct government experience or experience in a government relations role.
Board governance
The Board of Directors is collectively accountable to Digital Nova Scotia's members, partners, funders, and stakeholders. The Board is responsible for overseeing the organization's strategic direction, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources, and supporting the achievement of its mission and objectives.
Individual directors do not have authority to direct staff, approve organizational actions independently, or speak on behalf of the organization unless specifically authorized by the Board.
Performance and accountability
Board performance is reviewed annually through a board evaluation process that considers the collective effectiveness of the Board and the contributions of individual directors.
Directors are expected to uphold the organization's policies and governance standards.
Consistent failure to meet board responsibilities, including attendance expectations, may result in removal from the Board in accordance with organizational bylaws and policies.
