Overview

As a member of the military, Aerospace Control Operators operate radar, computer, communications, and other sensor systems for the surveillance and control of airspace.

The Aerospace Control Operator controls and coordinates the movement of military and civilian air/ground traffic at Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) aerodromes and tactical units. The primary responsibilities include:

- Operate command and control systems
- Provide ground control instructions to aircraft and vehicular traffic operating on the ground and flight advisory to aircraft
- Receive, relay, and record flight plan information
- Interpret weather reports
- Maintain records
- Respond to emergency situations

Work workplace

Aerospace Control Operators work underground or onboard aircraft. They may be employed across Canada, the United States, and Europe. They can also operate Air Traffic Control services such as flight advisory, ground control, and Precision Radar control to Wings and Tactical Helicopter squadrons in Canada.

If you join the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to a base, with potential relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you will serve part-time at a local Reserve unit,



typically working one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.

Entry requirements

- No prior experience or skills required; recruiters can assess fit based on your interests and attributes
- Minimum education: Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, with Grade 10 applied Math or equivalent

Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, followed by about three months of Aerospace Control Operations training in Cornwall, Ontario, covering surveillance, flight services, and air traffic functions. Opportunities exist for specialized courses such as Precision Approach Radar Control and Data Systems Coordination.

Part-time options

Part-time positions are available with the Primary Reserve across Canada. Members serve approximately 12 days per month, with pay at 92.8% of Regular Force rates, perks, and pension contributions. Training involves about two months at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations.
