Overview

Volunteer positions are available with Nova Scotia Health Community Health Boards (CHBs) in Windsor, West Hants. CHB members work with community partners, local municipalities, Nova Scotia Health, and other organizations to improve health and wellness in their communities.

Responsibilities

- Gather and share information about how to improve and promote health & wellness close to home.
- Advocate for actions to improve health & wellness based on community priorities.
- Develop partnerships with local community groups and award Wellness Fund grants to local projects.
- Participate in the development and review of community health plans.
- Attend and actively participate in board meetings and sub‑committee work.

What a CHB is NOT

- gives it’s an advisory board that does not govern or manage health service delivery, hire or supervise staff, hold funds in its own right, or resolve individual patient care concerns.

Qualifications & Skills

- Resident of the area served by the CHB with an active interest in community health and wellness.
- Clear knowledge or willingness to learn about community health and wellness issues and interest in health promotion.
- Awareness of the social determinants of health.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness and ability to commit the necessary time for board work.

Time Commitment





- Attend approximately one 1.5 to 2 hour monthly meeting, for 10 months (Sept–June).
- May be asked to assist with sub‑committee work or additional meetings.
- Term of up to 3 years, with a maximum of two 3‑year terms.
- Opportunities for public engagement and health promotion events.

Training & Support

- Participate in the volunteer development and engagement process with a formal orientation during the first year.
- Receive specific training for future roles as needed.
- Ongoing support from the CHB Coordinator and the Executive Committee.

Expectations of CHB Members

- Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials.
- Attend and actively participate; provide notice of non‑attendance.
- Maintain a positive, cooperative relationship with CHB members and partners.
- Consider multiple perspectives and make balanced decisions.
- Disclose any real or perceived conflict of interest and follow the CHB Conflict of Interest process.
- Support and abide by decisions passed by the CHB.
- Adhere to all CHB and Nova Scotia Health Authority policies and guidelines.
- Recognize the Chair as the CHB spokesperson.
- Participate in annual self and board evaluation.
- Report complaints through the CHB level, which will be investigated and addressed as appropriate.

Accountability

- Nova Scotia Health Authority (via the CHB Coordinator and PECHBS team).
- The communities served by the CHB.
- Other CHB members.

Eligibility Requirements

- Minimum 16 years old.
- Must reside in Nova Scotia and within the CHB catchment area.
- Criminal record check and vulnerable sector search required.
