The Opportunity

Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an prospect to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Programmer – Aquatics, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Lifeguard/Instructor (PT) position is responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers, class participants and guests at the City of Barrie’s pools and beaches. The position rotates between instructing aquatics lesson programs and monitoring recreational open swim programs, acting as a Lifeguard during open swim programs and an Aquatics Instructor during lesson programs.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

- National Lifeguard (NL) Pool Certification from the Lifesaving Society
- Swim Instructor Certification from the Lifesaving Society
- HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate from HIGH FIVE® National within three (3) months of hire
- Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
- Demonstrated ability to perform in a manner consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission and values
- Demonstrated ability to demonstrate/participate in aquatics lesson programs for the duration of a class session
- Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to stand for extended periods of time
- Basic oral and written communication,



interpersonal and customer service skills
- Availability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as required

Conditions of Employment

Police Record Check Policy is required for any new employee to the City of Barrie in accordance with the policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria are exempt from this requirement.

Location

Various Recreation Locations: Allandale Recreation Centre (190 Bayview Drive), East Bayfield Community Centre (80 Livingstone Street East), Peggy Hill Team Community Centre (171 Mapleton Avenue).

Hours

The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.

Wage

- Hourly Pay Rate: $21.38 to $27.65

Note

All applicants will be invited to participate in an aquatics skills assessment as the first stage of the recruitment process. The final date for this aquatics assessment is Sunday August 9, 2026.
