RQ00620 - Sr. Database Administrator

6-month contract (125 business days)- possible extension

Up to 5 days onsite (subject to HM's discretion) - 525 University Avenue Toronto

Background: The Database Administrator will support the next phase of the modernization strategy. OH is committed to migrating appropriate products to Azure Cloud platform and identifying opportunities to improve and mature existing processes both on cloud as IAAS and PAAS from database administration and cloud engineering perspective. As the Agency makes progress towards a more efficient and stream‑lined health system, an investment in MS Azure/Synapse platforms requires maintenance and operation support to sustain growth.

Qualifications

- At least 7‑9 years of proven working experience as a SQL Server (Azure and on‑prem)
- At least 5 years of proven experience with Azure Synapse Analytics
- Extensive experience with SQL Server 2012/14/16/19 on Windows and Linux operating systems
- At least 5 years of experience managing Azure SQL dedicated pool, Data Lake and Serverless
- Experience with Azure Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database
- Demonstrated understanding of performance tuning and analysis in Microsoft SQL Server environments
- Holding MS Azure Fundamentals (AZ‑900T00) , Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals (DP‑900) and Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions (DP‑300) certifications

Desired Skills

- Experience with distributed data systems
- Experience with middleware and gateways
- Experience researching and implementing cyber security vulnerability remediations
- Awareness of emerging IT trends and directions
- Experience with Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools
- Knowledge of Information Management principles, concepts, policies and practices; experience in Database Administration and Maintenance Optimization




- Additional responsibilities/skills for Data Warehouse including Oracle OBIEE
- Subject matter expert in database design of the data warehouse or data marts
- Experience and expert knowledge in technology and/or application required including installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrade (technology stack) and cloning

Required Skills

- Experience in Case Management and ERP
- Experience designing/developing an automated data distribution mechanism and understanding of object‑oriented analysis and design techniques
- Experience developing enterprise architecture deliverables (e.g. models)
- Knowledge of Ontario Government Enterprise Architecture processes and practice
- Experience in impact analysis, implementation planning and execution of technology or suite specific patches, maintenance packs and releases, and technology stack patch sets and releases
- Experience in technical design, planning and implementation of specific technology or suite; experience with database administration and vendor support services
- Experience and skill set requirements

Deliverables

- Support installation, configuration, security, operation and maintenance of SQL Servers for recent builds with emphasis on SQL Managed Instance
- Develop, execute and analyze database expansions, re‑organization and purging of SQL 2019
- Participate in long‑term technical strategy and architecture for the Data Warehouse and Analytics Data Hub




- Develop systems and processes to monitor data quality or integrity, diagnose problems and implement solutions
- Provide expertise in support of complex cross‑platform database migrations and data governance activities
- Manage SQL high availability options (Log Shipping, DB Mirroring, DB Clustering)
- Resolve and debug complex reporting and analytic application problems
- Participate in creation and maintenance of the Enterprise Data Strategy Plan
- Manage SQL databases on Azure Cloud, SQL Always‑On and Clustering
- Guide support for a hybrid environment of on‑premise and cloud‑based database environments
- Configure, manage, monitor and maintain database server performance, health, availability and security
- Provide feedback and recommendations to management for best course of action where needed
- Participate in problem analysis and resolution (e.g., tuning of SQL queries, deadlocks, data problems, access times, application recoveries)
- Perform software review, evaluation, recommendations, design and implementation for database management tools
- Lead database disaster recovery design, implementation and monitoring
- Handle patching, backup and testing of SQL and Oracle database backup and recovery processes
- Provide guidance and reference to Tier 1 and Tier 2 Service Desk resources, as well as Tier 3 team members
