Overview

As a member of the military, Information Systems Technicians are experts in Information Technologies (IT) who deploy, establish, administer, and maintain multi-platform networking computer environments, and a variety of data and voice networks. They are part of a larger team that provides the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communications and information services throughout Canada and around the world.

They handle communications and information systems equipment, such as:

- Wired and wireless communications and information systems
- Fibre optic and copper wire broadband technology
- Voice and data network equipment and servers

Work environment

Information Systems Technicians experience the unique adventures and challenges of working outdoors, in military vehicles and server rooms. They work across the country and worldwide wherever the CAF has a footprint.

For Regular Force members, after completing training, you will be assigned to your first base with some flexibility regarding postings. Accommodations may not always be possible, so relocation can be expected at some point. Primary Reserve members will be attached to a specific Reserve unit; work is part‑time and typically involves one night per week and some weekends, with possibilities of full‑time roles.

No previous work experience or career related skills are required. CAF recruiters can help determine if your personal interests and attributes match the criteria for this occupation.

The minimum required education is the completion of Grade 10 (or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Academic Math and Grade 10 Science). Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

The first stage is the Basic Military Qualification (Basic Training), held at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint‑Jean‑sur‑Richelieu, Quebec.



This course establishes core skills and knowledge common to all trades and emphasizes the CAF physical fitness standard, making the training physically demanding.

Information Systems Technicians then attend the Canadian Force School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario. Training lasts approximately 12 months and covers:

- Computer systems theory
- Information systems security
- Installation and operation of information systems
- Maintenance and operation of power generating systems
- Information systems maintenance and repair techniques
- Installation and maintenance of fibre optic and copper wire systems
- Advanced Routing and Switching
- Server Administration

They may later pursue specialised skills through formal military and civilian courses, such as:

- Cryptographic equipment operation and maintenance
- Advanced server management
- Advanced switch and router configuration and maintenance
- Software and firmware operations and maintenance
- Computer Network security

Advanced training opportunities for experienced Technicians include:

- Data Network Designer
- Leadership Courses
- Life Cycle Materiel Manager
- Army tactical network (LCSS)

Part‑time options

This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve at certain locations across Canada. Reserve Force members usually serve part‑time at a military unit in their community and at military bases within the region where they live. They may work while pursuing education or a civilian job, receive training pay, and are not required to relocate. Voluntary deployment opportunities are also available.

Reserve Information Systems Technicians provide fast, reliable wired and wireless communications infrastructure to military units during training and operations. Part‑time members typically serve evenings and weekends at a Canadian Army Reserve unit in their local community. They receive 92.8 % of Regular Force rates, a advantages package, and can contribute to a pension plan.
