An air cooler isn't one piece of equipment. It's a heat exchanger, a steel structure, a rotating equipment package and an electrical package - built to one specification and inspected against one plan. Exchanger Industries is hiring a
Project Engineer
to own that whole picture.
Exchanger Industries Limited (EIL) is Canada's leading provider of custom heat transfer solutions. From our Alberta operations, we design and manufacture high-quality Shell & Tube and Air Cooler equipment for energy and industrial customers across Canada and around the world.
About the role This position is dedicated to our air cooler product line. Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, you are the technical liaison between the front end of the business (Sales and Estimating, Project Engineering, Thermal, Mechanical and Structural Engineering, and Project Management) and Quality and Manufacturing.
Air coolers are multi-disciplinary by nature, and the role is scoped to match. Alongside the heat transfer scope, you'll work across steel structure design and detailing, motors, actuators, vibration and temperature instrumentation, and electrical works - the packages that make an air cooler a functioning unit.
Client contracts and specifications come to you; you turn them into a technical risk register, engineering notes the drawing package can't otherwise express, and an Inspection and Test Plan that Quality Control, Production and Testing can all work from. You'll sit in squad checks before packages go out for client review, write the clarifications when comments come back,
and be part of the root cause conversation when a quality issue surfaces mid-project.
What you’ll do
Review client contracts and specifications, produce summaries, and prepare the technical risk register
Compose detailed engineering notes for drawings, capturing contract requirements the drawing package doesn't otherwise express
Create the Inspection and Test Plan on a consistent, repeatable methodology, aligned to the customer specification and to EIL Quality Control, Production and Testing
Identify the NDE and other quality procedures required by code and customer specification
Review ITPs, 3D models, drawings and thermal, mechanical, structural and miscellaneous calculations, and take part in squad checks before client issue
Act as technical resource to the Project Manager in internal and client kick-off meetings, and prepare clarifications and responses to customer queries
Support root cause analysis on quality issues, contribute to EIL standard procedures, support field services on site visits, and prepare provincial and National Board equipment registrations
What you bring
An engineering degree in Mechanical or Civil-Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Five or more years of relevant technical experience in industrial manufacturing - air cooler structures, process equipment, heat exchangers and related piping
Demonstrated knowledge of API-661 and API-660, TEMA and ASME BPV, the structural codes behind the supporting steel (CISC, AISC, NBC and CSA) and NACE where the service demands it
Working knowledge of steel structure fabrication, heat transfer, pressure testing, x-ray and weld examination, plus QA/QC and NDE for carbon steel, stainless steel and exotic materials
Multi-discipline exposure across the packages an air cooler brings together - steel structure design and detailing, motors, actuators, vibration and temperature instruments, electrical works
Solid organization under multiple deadlines, the ability to work in a team and carry projects independently
A valid Class 5 driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle for local and Alberta site visits
Work environment and travel Office-based with regular time in a heavy industrial fabrication shop where PPE is required; regular standing, walking, stair climbing and bending. Travel to job sites or subcontractor facilities is required as projects demand, and international travel may come up.
What we value - RISE Respect and Safety First. Integrity in Action. Seek Growth. Excel as a Team. We hire people who are curious, speak up, and want to make the work around them better.
Exchanger Industries Limited is an equal-opportunity employer. We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
