Overview

Volunteer member of a Nova Scotia Health Community Health Board (CHB) to improve health & wellness in the South Shore region.

Responsibilities

- Attend CHB meetings (1–2 hours/month, 10 months/year)
- Participate in monthly board meetings and sub‑committee work as requested
- Gather community ideas, share information on health & wellness, and advocate for priority actions
- Develop partnerships with local community groups and award Wellness Fund grants to community projects
- Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials and coming fully prepared
- Actively participate, maintain positive relationship, show respect, and follow CHB processes (conflict of interest, decision‑making, etc.)
- Adhere to CHB and Nova Scotia Health Authority policies, guidelines, and confidentiality requirements
- Assist in annual self and board evaluations and support agreed actions

Qualifications & Experience

- Resident of the CHB catchment area with a strong interest in community health & wellness
- Clear knowledge of community health issues or willingness to learn; interest in health promotion
- Awareness of social determinants of health
- Team‑working ability to achieve shared goals as identified by the CHB plan
- Commitment to volunteer time as described above

Time Commitment

Expected to attend one meeting per month (1.5–2 hr) for 10 months (Sept to Jun). Sub‑committee meetings may be requested occasionally.



Terms up to three years with a maximum of two terms.

Training & Support

Orientation binder and formal orientation during the first year. Ongoing support from CHB Coordinator and Executive Committee. Specific training for future roles as needed.

Accountability

Accountable to the Nova Scotia Health Authority via the CHB coordinator, the community served, and other board members.

Volunteers are expected to wear a professional image, clean and appropriate attire, and the volunteer ID badge at all times.

Volunteer Requirements

- Minimum 16 years old
- Must reside in Nova Scotia and in the CHB's catchment area
- Criminal record check and vulnerable sector search
