The First Mate (Chief Officer) is directly responsible tothe Captain for the efficient and economical operation of the deck department,maintaining equipment in their charge, and the allocation of duties to, andsupervision of, all persons under their authority.The First Matehas authority over all junior Deck Officers and all members of the deckdepartment crew. While on watch, as the Captain's representative, they areresponsible for the safety of the ship, the compliance with regulations, andcarrying out the orders of the Captain. Education, Experienceand Licenses:

ChiefOfficer Near Coastal or Unlimited certificate. (Master Near Coastalpreferred) SeafarersMedical Certificate. RadioOperator Certificate. Certificatesof Proficiency in STCW Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats otherthan Fast Rescue Boats, Advanced Fire Fighting. ContinuousCertificate of Discharge (Discharge Book). SpecializedPassenger Safety Management. Key Accountabilities:

Asthe Captain’s deputy, ensures the safe operation of the vessel and thesafety of passengers, crew and vehicles; ensures all crew members andwharfingers are accounted for and wearing proper personal protectiveequipment. Preparesship for daily operations; Toolbox Talks,



checks all navigationalequipment, deck machinery and shore ramps. Supervisesvessel loading and unloading, embarkation and disembarkation ofpassengers. Performsadministrative duties and maintains various records such as attendance,overtime, Transport Canada Logs, Management System Check Lists, incident& accident reports, Planned Maintenance system preventativemaintenance jobs. Supervisesthe maintenance and repair or replacement of all firefighting andlifesaving equipment. Isfamiliar with and ensures compliance with the emergency operation of allmachinery and equipment in their respective departments on Company ships. Supervisesand coordinates activities of deck crews, trains new crew members andmentors Junior Officers. Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a just-cause safety culture Other Skills and Abilities:

Strongwritten, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Knowledgeof vessel operating processes, procedures, and technology. Conflictresolution skills. WHMISis required (Company provided training). Accessibilitytraining is required (Company provided training). WorkplaceHarassment and Violence Prevention Training is required (Company providedtraining).
