Overview

As a member of the military, Critical Care Nursing Officers provide care in the critical care domain of practice to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations in in‑patient care and medical evacuation environments while on operation. They are specialized in intensive care, emergency room and trauma resuscitation.

Key Responsibilities

Critical Care Nursing Officers work within a collaborative practice model with other members of the health care team and lead nursing care delivery within their area of practice. Their responsibilities include:

- Patient care delivery in critical, trauma, and emergency settings
- Policy and program management for critical care operations
- Clinical leadership and oversight of multidisciplinary teams
- Training and education of nursing staff and support personnel

Work Setting

Usually based in civilian hospitals, aeromedical evacuation units, operational CAF units, training establishments and headquarters. Schedules vary from shift work to a regular 40‑hour week. Officers may be called for exercises, medical evacuations, and domestic or international emergencies. Deployments involve living and working in the same environment as the CAF members they treat.

Entry Plans

Direct Entry: Candidates who hold a university degree, a valid Registered Nurse licence, and relevant critical care experience may be placed directly into a Critical Care Nursing Officer role after evaluation.



Further education or certification may be required.

In‑Service Selection: Nursing Officers may progress to this specialty after selection, gaining increasing responsibility, rank, and specialization.

Training and Qualifications

Required to complete Rank Qualification Lieutenant training and a formal critical care nursing course. Certification is obtained in a Canadian civilian tertiary care facility. Officers may pursue additional specialized courses and certifications such as:

- Critical Care Aeromedical Evacuation Specialist
- Strategic Tactical & Forward Aeromedical Evacuation
- Mobile Surgical Resuscitation Team
- Canadian Medical Emergency Response Team
- Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant (CCNO‑AA)
- Nurse Practitioner
- Special Forces support

I CCNO‑AA Role (Optional Specialization)

Advanced nursing and anesthesia support in acute, complex, and remote environments under an anesthetist’s supervision. Duties include anesthesia‑focused monitoring, airway and ventilation support, induction and maintenance during surgery, peri‑operative crisis management, and post‑anesthesia care.

Part‑Time Options

Reserve Force Critical Care Nursing Officers receive the same training as Regular Force counterparts. They work part‑time with one night per week and occasional weekends, with the possibility of full‑time employment.
