Located on the northwestern tip of Long Lake, Nanaimo Memory Care is an 83‑bed beautiful residential complex care community. Offering resident‑centered care with a specialized focus on our award‑winning Avenir Alzheimer’s program. Designed to encourage interaction and independence while concentrating on meeting resident’s unique needs by promoting their individuality and enhancing their health and spiritual well‑being.

This community will be the first stand‑alone memory care residence available to seniors living with dementia on Vancouver Island. Residents will benefit from Nanaimo Memory Care’s neighbourhood design concept and secure home‑like environment. Alzheimer’s‑trained licensed professional staff on site 24 hours a day conduct meaningful engagements personalized to each resident’s preferences. Our residents will enjoy elegantly furnished private and semi‑private suites with a personal bathroom.

Job Description

Position Summary: The Medication Assistant administers medications as prescribed by the physician, monitors medication effectiveness, and reports any noted adverse reactions or side effects.

- Assist all residents with a high quality of medication administration assistance per individual Care Plan/ISP as directed by physician orders.
- Assist with personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, shaving, incontinent care, foot care, vital signs, height and weight checks per policy.
- Make beds as needed in the A.M., turn down beds in the P.M., strip beds once each week or PRN.
- Perform personal laundry on residents’ first scheduled shower day.
- Handle linens per shift.
- Assist residents with meal times, cut food, encourage to eat, feed when needed.
- Participate in all aspects of special programs offered in personalized memory care program.




- Maintain a calm atmosphere at all times.
- Keep kitchen, work station, laundry room, bathroom and common areas neat and clean.
- Complete all assignments in a timely manner according to the chain of command.
- Report to the Director of Health Services and/or LPN–LVN Care Partner any unusual resident behavior.
- Check the station bulletin board per shift for Special Needs Sheet and other pertinent information.
- Provide activities as planned and/or directed.
- Document resident status per policy.
- Respond to call lights and emergencies promptly.
- Provide emergency care within scope of practice.
- Be familiar with and enforce all facility policies.

Qualifications

- Education: High School diploma preferred. Medication Assistance Certificate (state where required).
- Experience:



One year experience working as a Medication Assistant/CAN/PCA/RA preferred.
- Experience: One year experience working with Senior Living/Alzheimer’s residents preferred.
- Knowledge / Skills:
- Ability to learn and work with the specific needs of the residents.
- Willingness to be available for any emergencies regarding the facility.
- Basic proficiency in English for communication with residents.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite products.

- Special Requirements: Doctor’s statement verifying free from communicable disease.

Additional Information

Tools, equipment, machines, computers and software used on the job:

- Personal computer, printer, copier, scanner, fax machine, pager, telephone.
- Medical assessment equipment.
- Washer/dryer machines.

Physical activities of the position:

- Lifts up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
- Carries up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
- Pushes and pulls up to 100 lbs. occasionally.l
- Climbs, reaches, bends and twists occasionally.
- Talks and listens occasionally.
- Sits 2 hours per day; stands and walks 6 hours per day (combined) – 8 hr. day.

Physical requirements of the job:

- Medium work – exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

Visual acuity requirements:

- Resident Care/Assessment: Must be intact including color, depth perception and field of vision.

Environmental factors:

- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
- Hazards include some hazardous waste; fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
