Overview

As a member of the military, Signal Technicians are experts in telecommunication technologies. They maintain, repair, configure, administer, and modify leading‑edge communication systems and provide the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communications and information services throughout Canada and around the world.

Responsibilities

- Operate specialized electronic test equipment.
- Perform corrective and preventive maintenance, diagnosis, modifications, installations, configurations, inspections, and administration for wired and wireless communication systems, radio, satellite, microwave broadband technology, radar location and detection technology, fibre optic and copper wire broadband technology, and voice and data network defence.

Work Environment

Signal Technicians work outdoors, in military vehicles, and in maintenance workshops, across Canada and worldwide wherever the CAF has a footprint. Depending on the force (Regular or Primary Reserve), postings may involve relocation or part‑time service with a local reserve unit.

Entry Plans

Direct Entry Options: No previous work experience or career‑related skills are required. CAF recruiters can help determine fit.

Minimum required education: completion of provincial Grade 10 requirements or secondary 4 in Quebec (including Grade 10 Academic Math and Grade 10 Science). Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

- Basic Military Qualification (Basic Training) – basic core skills and CAF physical fitness standard.
- Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics – ~16 months, two parts: Part 1 (electronics engineering technician program) covering electrical & electronic theory, digital electronic theory,



signal processing devices, power supplies, radio & antenna systems, satellite & microwave systems, test instrumentation.
- Part 2 – specific training on communications systems and equipment: radio communications & security, installation and operation of systems, maintenance of power generating systems, repair techniques, fibre optic and copper wire systems, basic routing & switching concepts, advanced radio equipment testing instrumentation.
- Opportunities for specialized skills via formal military and civilian courses (cryptographic equipment, electronic warfare, counter‑IED equipment, satellite terminal, missile detection & defence, ground penetrating radar, switches, routers, software and firmware operations).
- Advanced training for those demonstrating ability and potential, including technical communications security inspector, leadership courses, lifecycle materiel manager.

Part Time Options

This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve at various locations across Canada. Reservists usually serve part time at a military unit in their community and at military bases within the region where they live. Reserves may serve while attending school or working a civilian job. They are paid during training and are not required to relocate. They can volunteer to move or to deployment opportunities within or outside Canada. Reserve Signal Technicians serve with the Canadian Army, providing rapid, reliable wired and wireless communications infrastructure for training and operations.

Reserve Signal Technicians are paid 92.8% of Regular Force rates of pay, receive a benefits package, and can contribute to a pension plan.
