About Our Opportunity
Do you have the skills to care for captive wildlife, maintain park grounds, and perform a variety of unique tasks outdoors year‑round? Welcome to the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park Attendants (Maintenance) program. You will work under the Maintenance Supervisor and contribute to the park’s infrastructure, animal care, cleanliness, and visitor experience.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain the facility’s infrastructure – walkways, trails, waterways, animal enclosures, and buildings, including associated electrical, plumbing, and sewer systems.
- Perform general maintenance tasks such as mowing, whipper‑snipping, painting, carpentry, fencing, and snow clearing.
- Keep the facility clean and safe by carrying out janitorial duties including cleaning washrooms and garbage collection.
- Assist park visitors by answering questions and providing park related information.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Assist the animal care team with feeding and caring for captive wildlife.
- Prepare diets for animals.
- Clean and disinfect animal enclosures and their pools.
- Conduct routine health checks.
- Complete any additional tasks that may be required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completed high school or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Above‑average knowledge of carpentry, systems maintenance, and familiarity with the trades.
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills; a team player.
- Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Good physical health, able to perform heavy lifting (at least 25 kg) and general labour such as climbing, crouching, walking, standing, shovelling, and raking.
- Computer skills, especially email and data entry.
- Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s licence (or equivalent).
- Criminal background check.
Assets Considered
- One year or more of carpentry experience.
- Previous experience as a maintainer at a zoo, wildlife park, or similar setting.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS.
- Knowledge of Indigenous wildlife, habitat, and environmental issues.
- Basic First Aid/CPR Certificate or better.
Pay Grade and Salary
Pay Grade: MOS 08
Salary Range: $1,851.41 – $1,896.89 bi‑weekly

Working Conditions
- Work schedule may include long days, weekends, holidays, and evenings; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Available for irregular unscheduled hours or emergency call‑backs, such as storm‑closure duties.
- Quick adaptation to changes in planned work on short notice and comfort performing a wide variety of daily tasks.
- Selected interviewees may need to submit a driver’s abstract.
