W-6 Crew Leader - Wastewater Collections
Definition: Supervisory and construction, maintenance, and repair work on an assigned public works project; all other related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
- Works under general supervision of the Director of Public Works.
- Has immediate responsibility for work performance of an assigned crew of laborers and/or equipment operators engaged in routine construction or maintenance tasks.
- Errors could result in considerable confusion and delay of work projects, damage to equipment, waste of materials, or excessive cost of a major municipal service.
- Exercises some independent judgment as to work methods and procedures although projects are for the most part conducted according to established routine.
- Supervises more than 5 but seldom over 20 employees.
- Makes intermittent contacts with the general public.
- Frequent physical effort required to perform duties under varied weather conditions.
Examples Of Work
- Plans use of manpower and equipment and carries through to execution projects and programs assigned by the Director of Public Works or his designee.
- Provides general coordination and supervision over employees in the field by instructing personnel as to procedures to be followed in connection with specific task assignments.
- Processes daily work orders received from the General Foreman of Public Works; follows up on resulting assignments for compliance with instructions; approves time reports covering assignments of personnel and equipment.
- Coordinates and provides general supervision of field operations during snow plowing and removal or during other emergency activities of all divisions of the Public Works.
- Maintains sewer lines,
manholes; performs wide-ranging tasks involving upkeep and repair of pump stations, lays pipe, installs sewers and hydrants, repairs broken sewer or water mains; inspects and repairs; handles complaints; supervises and assists in maintenance of waste water pump stations sewer mains, forced sewer mains and sewer collection system.
High school diploma or equivalent; five years’ experience in public works construction or maintenance activities involving minor supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education/certification and experience.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill: Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques relative to construction and maintenance. Knowledge of the physical characteristics of the Town and its road system. Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of groups of employees engaged in a variety of public works construction, Sewer pumps stations and maintenance operations. CDL License and Tanker endorsement.
