Detailed Overview

The Licensed Practical Nurse (Theatre Qualified) provides practical nursing services in an operating room environment as a member of an integrated surgical team performing varied and complex surgical interventions. The role involves consulting, conferring, and collaborating with other members of the surgical team to facilitate safe and effective surgical interventions through the performance of circulating duties and scrubbing in accordance with established standards and protocols. This includes pre‑operative, operative and post‑operative activities such as assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting client care and providing support to clients and their families.

Responsibilities

- Assesses, plans, implements,



evaluates and documents patient care during the pre‑operative, operative and immediate post‑operative periods.
- Performs scrub duties, admission of patient to the OR and circulating duties, in collaboration with the peri‑operative team and the RN coordinating care in the OR.
- Assists the RN coordinating care in the OR when requested, performing duties that support the primary circulating RN.
- Alerts the RN to any problems, changes or unusual signs or symptoms of the patient while in the operating room setting.
- Documents observations, treatment and other patient care activities during the pre‑intra‑post‑operative periods.
- Attends staff meetings, quality improvement rounds, and other meetings to provide and receive information and feedback about patients and patient care.
- Assists with orientation of recent staff by demonstrating work procedures.
- Attends educational sessions, in‑services and workshops as required to support knowledge enhancement and technology changes.
- Performs related clerical duties such as answering the telephone, relaying messages and maintaining standardized records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses with the full range of current licensed practical nursing competencies, and graduation from an accredited OR program for Licensed Practical Nurses plus one (1) year recent related experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse in acute care,



or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Current basic cardiac life support certification.
