Job Overview
Kaplan International Pathways Canada is hiring a casual Engineering Tutor to join our team. The tutor will provide academic support to international students enrolled in the Year One Foundation Program at the University of Alberta. This role focuses on supporting students in first-year university-level engineering courses, helping them strengthen their conceptual understanding and problem‑solving abilities.
Responsibilities
- Providing one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions to international university students in engineering-related subjects such as mathematics, physics, statics, dynamics, and introductory programming.
- Supporting students in developing analytical thinking and structured problem‑solving approaches, including breaking down complex problems step by step.
- Helping students apply theoretical knowledge to practical and real-world engineering contexts.
- Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student progress and provide feedback on their academic development.
- Clarifying course material and providing guidance on assignments, homework, quizzes, and exam preparation using clear and accessible explanations.
- Fostering a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence.
Qualifications & Experience
- Currently enrolled in or has completed a degree in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or Engineering Science).
- Solid proficiency at the university-level engineering subjects in mathematics, physics, chemistry and introductory programming, depending on student needs.
- Courses will be similar to those students take in the Engineering Qualifying Year.
- Strong ability to connect formulas and calculations to underlying principles; and to break down complex engineering concepts into clear, manageable steps using examples, diagrams, or real-world analogies.
- Prior tutoring, teaching, or laboratory instruction experience, particularly with international students, is an asset.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.
- Patience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to supporting international students’ academic success.
- Awareness of language barriers and strategies for supporting students with varying levels of English proficiency.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Location & Availability
This position is based in person at the University of Alberta North Campus in Edmonton. The successful candidate must be available to start on August 21, 2026, with afternoon availability required.
Please note that this is a term position until mid-December, with the possibility of extension.
Salary
This is a casual, hourly-paid position, with a salary of $25/hr, about 2-4 hours per week.
