About the Role
The Company is in search of a General Counsel to join their team. This senior leadership role is pivotal in providing strategic legal advice and support on a wide range of issues, including governance, operations, compliance, employment, labor relations, collective bargaining, risk management, and litigation. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving the modernization of policies and processes, overseeing the development and review of various legal agreements, and managing all legal proceedings involving the service. As the Chief's principal legal advisor, the General Counsel will also be tasked with identifying legal risks and implementing measures to ensure organizational compliance and proactive legal risk management.
Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should be principled and proactive legal leaders with a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a minimum of 10 years' of progressive legal experience, particularly in public sector law. The role requires a candidate with a strong background in governance, statutory interpretation, policy development, and risk management, as well as proven experience in advising senior leadership and leading or supporting collective bargaining processes. The ideal candidate will have exceptional communication, analytical, and negotiation skills, and be adept at managing legal teams and external counsel relationships. A membership in valuable standing with the Law Society of Ontario is essential, and experience within policing, municipal, or government environments is highly valued.
