NOC 31102 - General practitioners and family physicians
Provide comprehensive primary care to patients of all ages, delivering evidence-based diagnosis, treatment, and preventive services. Coordinate patient care with specialists and allied health professionals while maintaining accurate clinical documentation.

Main Duties
- Obtain detailed medical histories, perform physical examinations, and order or interpret diagnostic tests to establish diagnoses.
- Develop, implement, and adjust individualized treatment and care plans, including prescribing medications and therapies.
- Deliver preventive care services such as routine screening, immunizations, health promotion, and lifestyle counselling.
- Manage acute illnesses and exacerbations of chronic conditions, and perform minor clinical procedures as appropriate.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and follow up on patient progress and specialist recommendations.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records using electronic medical record systems and ensure appropriate follow-up and continuity of care.
Requirements
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Completion of a residency program in family medicine or equivalent postgraduate training.
- Certification or eligibility for certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or an equivalent certifying body.
- Eligibility for registration and licensure with the provincial or territorial medical regulatory authority.
- Clinical experience in primary care or family medicine demonstrating competence in diagnosis and management.
- Proficiency in English with effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate in French is an asset.

- Clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning across a broad range of conditions.
- Chronic disease management, including diabetes, hypertension, and mental health care.
- Preventive care planning and patient education for health promotion.
- Patient-centered communication, counselling, and shared decision-making.
- Management of acute care presentations and performance of minor procedures.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, documentation, and basic health informatics.
