Overview

As a member of the military, Aviation Systems Technicians handle, service, and maintain Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) aircraft, ground equipment, and associated support facilities.

Responsibilities

- Test, inspect and repair aviation systems including propulsion, airframe, and basic electrical components.
- Perform quality assurance checks.
- Prepare and maintain aircraft forms and statistical data.
- Operate aircraft support equipment.
- Perform aircraft handling tasks such as parking, towing, marshalling, starting, refueling, cleaning, and de‑icing.

Work Setting

Aviation Systems Technicians work at air bases in aircraft maintenance organizations, maintenance hangars, aboard aircraft, and on the flight line. They may also support tactical helicopter units and ships. The role requires shift work and overtime; deployments can range from Canadian bases to international locations in response to NATO and UN commitments.

Entry Requirements

- Completion of Grade 10 (or Secondary 4 in Quebec) with General Math or Math 416/CST 4.
- Preferred: College diploma or Red Seal in a related civilian occupation; foreign education may be accepted.

Training

Training begins with the Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course, followed by 8 weeks of Common Core mechanical and aircraft servicing at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering (CFSATE).



The 24‑week occupational training covers topics such as theory of flight, basic electrical, aircraft structures, propulsion systems, wiring & soldering, instrumentation, safety, hydraulic/fuel/brake/de‑icing systems, and environmental control systems.

Participants in the Non‑Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP) can complete portions of the Basic Occupational Qualification Training at approved Canadian colleges, receiving a full‑time salary, medical & dental care, and vacation pay.

Additional advanced courses include Instructional Technique, Aircraft Specific Type Courses, Engine Type Courses, Life Cycle Materiel Management, Aircraft Fluid Handling, Corrosion Identification & Control, Technical Writing, Technical Inspection & Quality Assurance, Flight Safety Investigators, Technical Administration, Leadership & Management.

Part‑time Options

This position is available for part‑time employment within the Primary Reserve across Canada, typically serving approximately 12 days per month on a regular workday schedule. Full‑time service may be required for short durations, and part‑time members may volunteer for deployments.

Part‑time members are paid 92.8 % of Regular Force rates and receive a standard benefits package, including potential pension contributions.
