Position purpose: The Center for Cutting-edge Education and Simulation in Nursing (CIESN) at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Ottawa aims to provide the highest standard of bilingual, nursing education for current and future health care providers in the Champlain and District Health Region, provincially, nationally and internationally.

Various methodologies are used to provide a milieu of excellence in teaching and learning including: use of up-to-date equipment and facilities that reflect current practice at health care facilities in the region, computer guided simulation, laboratory practice using current technology and simulation.

All education modules and simulations are designed to foster critical thinking, autonomous, self-directed and reflective practice.

Reporting to the Manager of the Center for Innovative Education and Simulation in Nursing (CIESN), the incumbent participates in a variety of technical activities to support students, teaching assistants, faculty members, and other scientific or engineering professionals, in an assigned group of specialized scientific teaching lab infrastructures.

Provides general technical support to lab users and focuses on the set-up and maintenance of lab equipment.

The work is performed with regular supervision,



under a predefined framework and clear guidelines, and requires a good general knowledge of the various technologies used. NOTA: This is a contract or temporary assignment for one (1) year.

The incumbent of this position will work two evening shifts per week from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Evening premiums will be offered.

In this role, your responsibilities include: Technical Support: Meets with clients to identify and analyze their needs for special purpose scientific/research lab equipment and materials.

Assists with the design, assembly, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of assigned laboratory equipment and materials to meet specific client needs and to ensure accurate and proper functionality.

Assists in the analysis and diagnosis of the causes of lab equipment and process malfunctions and, under supervision, carries out the required repair actions in order to maintain lab functionality for clients.

Carries out a limited range of other technical functions in support of research in the assigned lab.

Training: Trains, performs simple demonstrations for, and supports teaching assistants and students in the use of lab equipment and materials to improve end-user proficiency.

Promotes and supervises the responsible use of all lab equipment and materials to contribute to the safety of all users and to safeguard the value of the Universitys assets.

Health and Safety: Ensures that all assigned laboratories operate in accordance with the Health and Safety rules of the University, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and any other applicable regulations.

May be responsible for the collection, storage or disposal of hazardous materials.

Technical Advice: Provides general advice regarding the design of lab equipment to ensure the feasibility of fabrication and may provide build or fabricating consultation services when required.





Purchasing Advice: Researches, evaluates and recommends the acquisition of new lab equipment, instrumentation, and materials to ensure clients have proper access when required.

Maintains regular contact with suppliers to obtain information and diagrams to carry out modifications as necessary.

Inventory Control: Keeps track of the inventory of equipment, instrumentation and materials located in the assigned lab.

Assigns proper identification and maintains records in the inventory database.

Tracks the movement of items within the lab environment.

What you will bring: College diploma in natural/applied sciences or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum 1 year of experience providing support and technical advice in a teaching/research laboratory.

Knowledge of the specialized areas of research supported by the department or Faculty.

Knowledge of laboratory tools, equipment, instruments, materials, and hazards and their safe usage.

Knowledge of Health and Safety rules, regulations and University policies and procedures related to the operation of labs and lab equipment/material.

Knowledge of computers and data acquisition procedures.

Experience in providing technical support and advice to users for lab equipment.

Experience in designing, fabricating, assembling, building, testing and repairing special purpose lab equipment.

Experience in preparing and developing scientific experiments.

Ability to read and understand texts of considerable difficulty requiring understanding of concepts, procedures, and instructions.

Analytical skills to diagnose and repair laboratory equipment and material issues.

Ability to communicate technical concepts to users.
