About the Role

The Recreation Assistant is passionate about caring for residents, families, and team members. The role focuses on providing opportunities for residents to realize their maximum potential while promoting choice, dignity, and independence through holistic recreation therapy services.

What You Will Do

- Promote service excellence through active participation with the Interdisciplinary Team, achieving and maintaining quality resident care within the scope of Recreation Therapy.
- Provide services as indicated by the Recreation Therapy assessment and resident goals, and inform the Therapist of any changes in resident needs.
- Assist with functional support in mobility, comfort, self‑care, and intellectual stimulation under the Therapist’s direction.
- Collaborate with residents, respecting their values and preferences, and ensure timely reporting of changes in appearance, condition, or behavior to supervisors and nursing staff.
- Use appropriate approaches to meet residents’ emotional and psychological needs, and intervene as necessary.
- Recognize group dynamics and adjust program plans to accommodate increased agitation or lethargy.
- Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and timely documentation of resident care interventions and outcomes, and keep healthcare records updated with resident‑centered care plans.
- Communicate resident changes and unusual occurrences appropriately.
- Contribute to a safe workplace for residents, team, and self by adhering to safety guidelines and practices.
- Participate in the review, implementation,



and evaluation of therapy programs, and assist in setting short and long term goals for residents.
- Coordinate and orient volunteers who participate in therapy programs.

What You Bring

- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Rehabilitation Assistant Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- One year of recreational experience in a therapy setting.
- Working knowledge of a variety of recreational program modalities.
- Prior experience with dementia or long‑term care residents preferred.
- Ability to work effectively in a physically and mentally demanding environment.
- Excellent observation, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to operate simple tools to maintain or fix equipment.
