Job Summary

Northwood Medical Group is a growing healthcare organization operating multiple sites across Northern Ontario.

We are looking for a hands-on Controller / Finance Manager to lead our accounting function, improve financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, and support operational decision-making as the company continues to grow.

This is a key leadership role for someone who can both run the day-to-day accounting function and help management better understand the performance of each business unit.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, comfortable working across multiple entities, and able to turn accounting data into useful management reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting

- Lead the full-cycle accounting process across multiple related companies and operating locations.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and working papers.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure financial records are complete and accurate.
- Review bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, intercompany accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
- Ensure accounting policies are followed consistently across all entities.

Cash Flow, Budgeting & Management Reporting

- Prepare cash flow forecasts and help management understand near-term cash needs.
- Build and maintain budgets, forecasts, and variance reports.
- Prepare monthly reporting packages for ownership/management.
- Track performance by clinic, pharmacy, addiction clinic, and business unit.
- Identify cost savings, margin improvement opportunities, and operational issues through financial analysis.
- Support pricing, staffing, and growth decisions with financial data.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement

- Strengthen internal controls around cash, payroll, billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, and financial approvals.
- Improve accounting processes, reporting timelines, and documentation.
- Help implement better systems, dashboards, workflows, and controls as the organization scales.
- Ensure appropriate access controls are in place for accounting software, banking, payroll, and financial systems.
- Develop standard operating procedures for core finance processes.

Payroll, AP/AR & Administration

- Oversee payroll coordination and related reconciliations.
- Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Monitor vendor payments, collections, billing accuracy, and expense coding.
- Review employee expense claims and corporate credit card activity.
- Work with clinic, pharmacy, and operations teams to ensure financial information is captured properly.

Healthcare-Specific Finance

- Support reconciliation of clinic, pharmacy, and healthcare-related revenues.
- Track physician payments, clinic splits, pharmacy-related financial data, and other healthcare revenue streams.
- Help management understand profitability by service line and location.
- Support compliance with applicable reporting, tax, payroll, and regulatory obligations.

Year-End, Tax & External Advisors

- Coordinate with external accountants for year-end financial statements and tax filings.
- Prepare year-end working papers and schedules.

- Support corporate tax preparation, HST filings, payroll remittances, and other required filings.
- Liaise with banks, accountants, lawyers, insurance providers, and other external advisors as needed.

Qualifications

Required

- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience preparing financial statements, reconciliations, budgets, forecasts, and management reports.
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting, internal controls, payroll, AP, AR, and month-end close.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, NetSuite, or similar.
- High attention to detail and solid organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of the finance function.

Preferred

- CPA designation, CPA in progress, or equivalent senior accounting experience.
- Experience in healthcare, pharmacy, medical clinics, multi-location businesses, or owner-operated companies.
- Experience managing or mentoring junior accounting/admin staff.
- Experience improving accounting systems, reporting processes, dashboards, or internal controls.
- Comfort working in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment.

Ideal Candidate

You may be a good fit if you are:

- A strong senior accountant ready to step into a controller-level role.
- A current controller who wants a broader operational finance role.
- Someone who enjoys building structure, improving processes, and creating useful reporting.
- Comfortable being hands-on rather than only reviewing work from a distance.
- Interested in healthcare operations and multi-location business growth.

Pay: $80,000.00-$120,000.00 per year
