Red Seal Industrial Electrician – Duties and Responsibilities

Installation

- Install industrial electrical systems in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), provincial regulations, and company standards.
- Install electrical distribution equipment, transformers, motor control centres (MCCs), switchgear, panelboards, conduit, cable tray, and wiring systems.
- Install and commission electric motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, and industrial control systems.
- Install instrumentation, sensors, actuators, and field devices.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and P&IDs.;

Maintenance

- Perform preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on industrial electrical equipment.
- Inspect electrical systems to identify wear, deterioration, and safety hazards.
- Maintain motors, generators, lighting systems, control panels, PLC I/O, and power distribution systems.
- Test emergency power systems and UPS equipment.
- Replace defective components and restore equipment to operational condition.

Troubleshooting

- Diagnose electrical, electronic, and control system failures.
- Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment alongside automation technicians.
- Utilize electrical testing instruments including:
- Digital multimeters
- Megohmmeters
- Clamp-on ammeters
- Oscilloscopes
- Phase rotation meters
- Power quality analyzers
- Analyze root causes of equipment failures and recommend permanent corrective actions.

Automation & Controls

- Assist with commissioning automated equipment.
- Install and maintain PLC hardware and field wiring.
- Verify control circuits and safety interlocks.
- Assist with troubleshooting HMI and SCADA systems.
- Work with robotics, conveyors, packaging equipment, and automated manufacturing systems.

Preventative Maintenance

- Complete scheduled preventative maintenance activities.




- Maintain accurate maintenance records within the CMMS.
- Recommend equipment improvements to improve reliability.
- Participate in predictive maintenance activities including thermal imaging and vibration monitoring.

Safety

- Follow all Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
- Comply with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Perform electrical work safely on de-energized systems whenever possible.
- Wear appropriate PPE and arc flash protection.
- Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and safety meetings.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly.
- Maintain awareness of confined space, working at heights, and elevated work platform requirements.

Testing & Commissioning

- Perform insulation resistance testing.
- Conduct continuity and grounding tests.
- Verify proper motor rotation.
- Commission new electrical equipment.
- Verify system functionality prior to production startup.

Documentation

- Maintain detailed maintenance reports.
- Update electrical drawings and red-line changes.
- Document equipment modifications.
- Record test results and commissioning documentation.
- Maintain inventory records for electrical components.

Teamwork

- Work collaboratively with:
- Millwrights
- Instrumentation Technicians
- Automation Specialists
- Engineers
- Production Supervisors
- Contractors
- Provide technical guidance to apprentices.
- Mentor apprentice electricians and support Red Seal training requirements.

Emergency Response

- Respond to equipment breakdowns.
- Provide after-hours emergency maintenance when required.
- Support plant shutdowns and planned maintenance outages.

Quality

- Ensure installations comply with quality standards.
- Verify workmanship meets company specifications.
- Conduct inspections before equipment is returned to service.

Pay: $33.00-$40.00 per hour
