Your New Role
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Property Accounting function, with a strong focus on review, accuracy, compliance, and team leadership.
This position serves as the primary reviewer for key accounting processes and financial outputs, ensuring the integrity of tenant recoveries, reconciliations, tax filings, and financial reporting. You will lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals while driving process improvements and maintaining solid internal controls.
Key responsibilities include
- Reviewing year-end working papers and supporting audit requirements
- Reviewing annual CAM and realty tax reconciliations, billings, and pre-bill schedules
- Overseeing tenant billings and resolving complex tenant accounting inquiries
- Reviewing monthly bank reconciliations and following up on outstanding items
- Reviewing HST filings, tax instalments, and other compliance filings
- Reviewing management fee calculations and intercompany chargebacks
- Supporting MPAC submissions and realty tax recoveries
- Maintaining and strengthening internal controls and accounting procedures
- Leading, coaching, and developing property accounting staff
- Identifying and implementing process improvements and automation initiatives
- Working closely with Property Management and participating in arrears meetings
What You'll Need to Succeed The ideal candidate will come from a public accounting background, including:
- Preferred: Big 4 or mid-market public accounting firm experience with approximately 5-6+ years of total experience, including at least one year at the Manager level and exposure to real estate clients
- Alternative: Public accounting experience at the Senior level followed by experience working within a real estate organization in a supervisory capacity
