Overview:

As a cook in a long term care home, you will play an essential role in supporting the health, comfort and well-being of residents by preparing nutritious, high quality meals that meet individual dietary needs and preferences. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will ensure food is prepared, served, and stored in accordance with food safety standards and organizational policies.

Qualifications:

- Cook certification papers
- Must have knowledge and practice sanitation and safety measures needed working in a commercial kitchen.
- Food Handlers course (renewed every 3 years)
- Knowledge of special diets i.e. Diabetic, Low Fat, and High Fiber considered an asset.

Duties

- Prepare raw foods for cooking (meats, vegetables, fruits)
- Baking pastries (bread, biscuits, pies, cookies, cakes, other desserts)
- Preparation of sandwiches, soups, salads, special lunches.
- Setting up of steam table for transport to wings
- Portion and serve foods according tp prescribed methods and preferences ensuring diet orders are followed.
- Maintain work area – washing pots, pans, dishes used in meal preparation.
- Ensure storage areas are kept neat, clean and in order.
- Advise supervisor of any problems with menu, equipment or other job related duties
- Any other related duties assigned by supervisor.
- Aware of WHMIS and Health & Safety
- Attend regular staff meetings and in‐services and upgrading when offered.
- Know and understand shop rules and policy procedures for dietary department
- Handle food with care, maintaining cleanliness and adhering to proper food handling procedures to ensure safety and hygiene
- Support the kitchen team during busy periods by organizing ingredients, cleaning workstations, and restocking supplies
- Follow all food safety protocols diligently to prevent contamination and ensure compliance with health regulations




- Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating effectively and supporting colleagues in daily operations
- Familiarity with food handling safety practices in accordance with industry regulations
- Hands-on experience in a kitchen setting or food industry role is preferred but not mandatory for motivated learners
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced workplace while maintaining attention to detail

- Must be able to perform the duties with a minimum of supervision.
- Must be able to work under stress and demonstrate maturity, flexibility, and responsibility to be dependable and reliable
- Must demonstrate ability, initiative and good work ethics.
- Must have the ability to maintain good relations within the department and work cooperatively with other departments.
- Must accept verbal and written orders.
- Must possess good organizational & time management skills.
- Must possess good communication skills, written and verbal.
- Must exhibit empathy and understanding of elderly residents and their needs
- Must present a neat, professional and clean appearance

Working Conditions:

- Atmosphere may be warm or noisy at times.
- Must be able to withstand long periods, of standing, walking and lifting.
- May have to work under stressful conditions.

This position is located in a rural area of Nova Scotia. The applicant must be willing to relocate or commute daily. Pay: $22.63-$27.51 per hour
