Position Description

As a Coordinator of an energetic day camp team, you will mentor and motivate a group of staff in one of Norfolk County’s summer camps. Responsibilities include program planning, program delivery, staff feedback and evaluation, and administration; supervising a group of 1 to 10 campers (children or youth). Through effective leadership and programming, you enable children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. You are accountable for the wellbeing of staff and campers under the guidance of the Regional Coordinator, ensuring camp activities are safe, inclusive, and high quality following the High Five model.

- Develop program plans during Coordinator Training and submit them to the Regional Coordinator prior to the commencement of the summer day camp program (July 4, 2026). Prepare and submit a wrap‑up report by August 26, 2026.
- Prepare and organize program equipment, supplies and first aid supplies prior to and during camp, reporting any inventory shortages or damages to the Regional Coordinator.
- Be responsible for daily opening and closing procedures at camp locations.
- Organize and assist with set up and clean‑up of camp events, activities and programs.
- Facilitate day camp activities such as sports, games, swimming, crafts and special events. Ensure programming is inclusive and adapted to camper needs with regard to safety, hygiene, weather and breaks. Adapt program plans as required.
- Closely monitor camper conduct and provide leadership to staff regarding supervision strategies.
- Keep attendance records and promptly report absences to the Regional Coordinator. Know the location of each camper at all times during camp operation.
- Complete Incident reports as required and remit them to the Regional Coordinator in a timely manner.
- Prioritize child well‑being, safety and protection throughout the camp and for each camper within her assigned group. Evaluate potential risks and proactively take mitigating actions. Constantly assess weather to adapt program plans for camper and staff safety and comfort.
- Actively participate in program delivery, including leading activities, site set‑up/tear‑down and in‑water activities.
- Serve as a liaison with parents of campers,



reinforcing Norfolk County’s customer service, diversity and inclusion policies.
- Maintain and model a professional attitude.
- Assist with the facilitation of special events hosted by Norfolk County. Demonstrate confidence and the ability to make independent decisions in the best interests of the campers. Resolve problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
- Ensure all participants and parents are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes.
- Follow Norfolk County policies, procedures and Summer Day Camp Procedures in program activities.
- Maintain positive, constructive relationships with camp staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs.
- Coach and mentor day camp staff, volunteers and campers.
- Maintain effective and professional communication by providing regular updates and feedback to the Regional Coordinator.
- Report to the Regional Coordinator.
- Complete other duties as required.

Qualifications

- College/University student studying Recreation, Outdoor Leadership Education, Child and Youth Work, Social Services or related field; minimum 1 year of post‑secondary education required.
- Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (if hired, must be obtained by July 4, 2026).
- High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development (if hired, must be obtained by July 4, 2026).
- Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games.
- Leadership experience required (e.g., student council member or youth council leadership role).
- Supervisory experience in a day camp setting.
- Ability to prepare and adapt program plans and activities on a daily basis.
- Experience and skills in supporting staff, including coaching, training development, conflict resolution and mentoring.
- Excellent customer service and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and problem‑solving skills.




- Knowledge of programs offered by Norfolk County.
- Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision and follow all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
- Motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet).
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Note

Must be willing to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. Employment is conditional upon attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements, and ability to meet the employment term.

At the time of application, must be enrolled in a post‑secondary education institution or institution of higher learning. Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.
