Child Development and Care

- Support the RECE and other ECA staff in facilitating appropriate activities that promote children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
- Support implementation and evaluation of age‑appropriate programs.
- Supervise and engage children in play‑based learning activities.
- Use a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
- Support the holistic development of all children.
- Foster positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.
- Identify and expand upon learning opportunities (teachable moments).
- Identify and support each child’s individual learning and development.
- Support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Meet health, welfare and safety needs.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and hygienic classroom environment.
- Follow safe travelling and off‑site practices while providing adequate supervision.
- Support children’s daily routines, including toileting, dressing, and mealtimes.
- Provide first‑aid/CPR and protect children from physical and emotional harm.
- Implement emergency and evacuation plans in collaboration with the RECE.
- Identify and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
- Promote a healthy lifestyle and actively supervise.
- Meet nutritional needs and accommodate special nutritional requirements.
- Model and teach proper table manners.
- Establish a positive behaviour environment and facilitate appropriate language, conflict resolution, empathy, problem‑solving and coping skills.
- Use and promote active listening skills.

Food Handling, Meal Preparation & Kitchen Responsibilities

- Prepare, portion,



and serve meals and snacks in compliance with dietary guidelines and food safety standards.
- Maintain proper food storage and handling practices to prevent contamination.
- Ensure kitchen and food preparation areas are kept clean, sanitized, and organized.
- Monitor children during mealtimes, ensuring a safe and positive dining experience.
- Adhere to all public health and sanitation regulations, including allergen awareness and safe food handling.
- Adhere to requirements set out by Public Health and CCEYA.

Equipment & Facilities

- Develop and maintain a protected environment; check for physical hazards and report them.
- Maintain and implement safety standards and protocols.
- Use developmentally appropriate equipment, operate and maintain facilities.
- Maintain equipment, materials and furnishings and monitor cleanliness and sanitation as per policy and guidelines.

Family and Community Relations

- Build and maintain meaningful relationships with families and orient them to the program.
- Provide family resources and raise awareness of community events.
- Advocate for children and families and collaborate with parents to identify strengths, needs and interests of the child.
- Provide an inclusive environment.

Record Keeping

- Complete child’s daily log on CRAFTS for parents and daily program log/record in classroom.
- Attend parent meetings, staff meetings and other job‑related activities, which may be after hours.
- Fulfill all other related duties as assigned.

Critical Relationship Management

- Internal: Staff members, volunteers, children in the program.
- External: Parents and guardians of the children, regulatory agencies, Ministry of Education, Public Health and any other relevant agencies.

Managerial Responsibility

- Reports directly to the Childcare Center Supervisor.
- No direct reports.

Financial and Materials Management

- Minor level of material responsibilities (proper use and safekeeping of toys, equipment, etc.).
- Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines.
- No financial transactions processed.





Working Conditions

- Frequent lifting/moving of equipment and children, room set‑up, moderate amount of teaching.
- Use tablet or iPad for parent communication.
- Possibility of intervening in physical confrontations.
- Cleaning the facility and putting up wall displays.
- Required to lift up to 30 pounds with no assistance.
- Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, verbal abuse, tantrums, noise.
- Little to no travel required.

Education and Experience Qualifications

- 18 years of age or older (Canada Summer Job age requirement: 18‑30).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills required to work with children, parents and other staff.
- Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening completed.
- Updated Medical completed.
- Standard First Aid & Level C CPR.
- Complete all online Salvation Army courses.
- Valid Food Handler Certification in compliance with local health regulations.
- Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) certification is an asset.
- Valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle an asset.
- One year of related experience.
- Knowledge and experience in implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.
- Knowledge of child development and best practices in early childhood education.
- Understanding of food safety, dietary requirements, and sanitation practices.

Skills and Capabilities

- Ability to multitask and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for children.
- Willingness to develop an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
- Work in compliance with OH&S; Act and Regulations and abiding by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.
- Provide background check documentation as required, including child check when applicable.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and self‑aware; conduct self‑assessment and self‑care.
- Maintain physical health and mental well‑being.
- Participate in professional development (minimum of 8 hours per year).

Compensation

- Target hiring range: $21.28 to $26.60 per hour, with a maximum of $31.92.
- Placement in the salary range based on market conditions, internal equity and relevant qualifications.
