The Times Colonist has a permanent full time opportunity for an experienced Finance Manager/Controller in our downtown Victoria office. Reporting to the Publisher, the Finance Manager/Controller is responsible for all accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, payroll oversight, and financial controls. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity and timeliness of financial information while supporting strategic decision-making across the organization.

Responsibilities

Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. Responsible for preparing monthly commentary on the financial results including variance analysis, key metrics

Accountability for the oversight and performance for all accounting functions including accounts receivables, collections, accounts payables, cash and banking, and daily deposits and receipts.

Lead, coach and develop a team of accounting professionals in a unionized environment. Ensure completion of month-end close activities, account reconciliations and supporting working papers. Oversight of tax compliance and subsidy applications





Prepare annual budgets and business plans and partner closely with operational leaders to forecast and manage expenditures.

Prepare monthly forecasts, including cash flow projections and financial planning analyses.

Experience with defined benefit pension plans, pension governance, or pension regulatory reporting would be considered an asset

Advise Publisher and Department Managers on accounting standards guidance

Manage operations and financial reporting of the two charitable societies

Support the administration and governance of the organization's defined benefit pension plan, including annual audits, actuarial reporting and regulatory filings.

Manage / administer banking relationship and online access / security

Manage / administer accounting system and access rights / security

Indirectly report and provide financial information to HO finance group of majority shareholder

Foster a collaborative, service-oriented finance function and provide financial guidance to leaders throughout the organization.

Oversee payroll operations, including payroll processing, statutory remittances, year-end reporting (including T4 filings), and compliance with applicable legislation.

Oversee employee benefit and leave programs, including enrolments, terminations,



disability and leave administration, vendor relationships, employee communications, and compliance with plan and legislative requirements.

Requirements

CPA designation

Minimum five years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with experience in a management or supervisory capacity preferred

Advanced Excel skills

Strong analytical abilities

Strong knowledge/hands-on experience with complex full cycle accounting and financial planning systems. Experience with MS Great Plains would be an asset

Experience with system conversions an asset

Quick learner and strong ability to problem solve and work independently

Experience operating in a union environment would be an asset

Experience leading and managing teams

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across the organization. The salary range for this position is $115,000 to $145,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
