About Us:

Toboggan Creek Hatchery is dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of salmonid populations in British Columbia. We work closely with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and local community groups to support the long-term sustainability of wild fish stocks, with a particular focus on Coho salmon.

Position Overview:

We are currently seeking a hardworking and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Hatchery labourer . This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about the workplace and fisheries, even if they have no prior experience working in hatcheries. Training will be provided. The role involves a mix of fish care, grounds maintenance, and seasonal fieldwork—including working alongside DFO staff for Coho assessment and broodstock collection.

Fish Care & Rearing:

- Daily feeding, monitoring, and health checks of Coho juveniles.
- Cleaning tanks, raceways, and incubation trays to maintain optimal fish health.
- Assisting with fish transfers, sorting.

Grounds & Facility Maintenance:

- General upkeep of hatchery grounds including mowing, snow removal, trail maintenance, and repairs.
- Routine maintenance of equipment and hatchery infrastructure.

Field Work & Monitoring:

- Assisting DFO staff with the Coho Assessment Fence,



including installation, maintenance, and fish sampling.
- Supporting broodstock collection efforts, trap checks, and biological data collection

Data Recording & Reporting:

- Accurately recording data during all stages of fish development and fieldwork.
- Providing input for reports and updates on project progress.
- Working in a small, team-oriented environment with staff, volunteers.

Working Conditions:

- Outdoor and indoor work in all weather conditions.
- Early mornings, weekends, and irregular hours may be required during peak periods (e.g., broodstock collection season).
- Safety equipment and training provided.

Qualifications:

- Physically fit and comfortable working in varied weather conditions and remote environments.
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
- Ability to work independently or as part of a small team
- Comfortable working in and around water (streams, rivers)
- Seasonal flexibility required, including work during spawning periods (fall)
