Role: Java Backend Engineer

Location: Hybrid - Toronto - 4 days

/ Responsibilities

Backend

Development & Coding

- Develop, enhance, and maintain Java-based microservices and APIs.
- Write clean, efficient, and reusable code following best practices and design patterns.
- Build and optimise RESTful APIs aligned with OpenAPI specifications.
- Refactor legacy components for improved performance and maintainability.

Design & Architecture

- Design scalable, fault-tolerant backend systems to support large-scale user traffic.
- Participate in architecture discussions and propose backend solutions aligned with enterprise standards.
- Ensure code adheres to modular, reusable, and cloud-native design principles.

- Cloud & Containerisation
- Develop and deploy services on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or OpenShift.
- Work with Docker and Kubernetes for containerisation and orchestration.
- Ensure high availability, scalability, and resiliency of backend systems.

- CI/CD & DevOps Contribution
- Integrate backend services into CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
- Automate build, testing, and deployment processes.
- Continuously improve deployment efficiency and reliability through automation.

- Testing & Quality Assurance
- Write and maintain unit, integration, and functional tests.
- Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and standards.
- Ensure applications meet performance, security, and compliance requirements.

- AI-Assisted Development & Productivity
- Leverage AI tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar to accelerate development and improve code quality.
- Use automation tools to enhance development velocity and reduce manual effort.

- Monitoring & Production Support
- Monitor application performance using tools like Splunk or Dynatrace.
- Troubleshoot production issues and ensure system stability.
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical application support.

- Collaboration & Agile Practices
- Work closely with product owners, architects, and cross-functional teams.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews).
- Translate functional requirements into technical backend solutions.

- Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
- Maintain technical documentation for APIs, services, and workflows.

Share best practices and mentor junior engineers when required.

What are the top skills required for this role?

7 to 12 years of development experience.

- Java (Spring Boot, REST API, Microservices architecture)
- CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Docker & Kubernetes)
- Cloud experience (AWS / Azure / OpenShift)
- Gen AI tools
- Frontend : Angular (Positive to have)
