Position Summary The Language Assistant supports language revitalization, cultural preservation, and community engagement through the sharing of language, knowledge, and cultural teachings. Working closely with the Language and Culture Manager, language instructors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members, the Language Assistant serves as a mentor, role model, and cultural resource for learners of all ages.
The position helps strengthen the use of the language within families, schools, workplaces, and the community through conversation, storytelling, cultural activities, recordings, and educational programming.
Elders and Knowledge Keepers are strongly encouraged to apply. Qualified fluent speakers and individuals with significant language and cultural knowledge will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Language Mentorship and Instruction Support
· Engage learners in conversational language practice and everyday language use.
· Share traditional vocabulary, expressions, phrases, and correct pronunciation.
· Support learners through encouragement, guidance, and positive role modelling.
· Assist language instructors with classroom activities, demonstrations, discussions, and interactive learning experiences.
· Encourage the use of the language in homes, schools, workplaces, and community settings.
Cultural Knowledge Sharing
· Share traditional stories, oral histories, teachings, and cultural knowledge as appropriate.
· Help learners understand the connections between language, culture, land, identity, and community.
· Participate in cultural activities, ceremonies, gatherings, and special events.
· Provide guidance on traditional values, etiquette, protocols, and cultural practices.
· Support the respectful transmission of cultural knowledge across generations.
Program Support
· Assist with planning and delivering language and cultural programs, activities, and events.
· Review and contribute to culturally appropriate learning resources and materials.
· Participate in language recordings, documentation projects, resource development, and preservation initiatives as available.
· Provide feedback and recommendations to improve language and cultural programming.
· Maintain basic records and reports as required.
Community Engagement
· Build positive and respectful relationships with students, families, Elders, staff, and community members.
· Serve as a positive ambassador for language revitalization and cultural preservation.
· Encourage community participation in language and cultural initiatives.
· Support intergenerational learning opportunities that bring together youth, adults, and Elders.
Qualifications
Required
· Fluent speaker of the target language or demonstrated significant knowledge of the language and cultural teachings.
· Strong understanding of local traditions, customs, protocols, and cultural values.
· Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with people of all ages.
· Commitment to language revitalization, cultural preservation, and community well-being.
· Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Preferred
· Elder, Knowledge Keeper, or recognized cultural resource within the community.
· Experience working with children, youth, adults, and/or Elders.
· Experience supporting educational, cultural, or community programs.
· Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
· Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word.
· Experience with language documentation, recordings, or curriculum development.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
· Patience, adaptability, and a positive approach to mentoring learners.
· Respect for cultural protocols, confidentiality, and community values.
· Passion for language revitalization and lifelong learning.
Working Conditions
· Adaptable schedule of approximately 21–35 hours per week based on program needs, funding, and availability.
· Work may include classroom support, community events, cultural activities, land-based learning, and occasional evening or weekend activities.
· Some local travel may be required. Approved mileage and travel expenses may be reimbursed in accordance with Nation policy.
Preference Statement
Preference may be given to Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or individuals who possess extensive fluency and cultural knowledge of the language and traditions being supported. However, all qualified applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to language revitalization and cultural preservation are encouraged to apply.
About the Role The Language Assistant plays an important role in preserving language, strengthening cultural identity, and passing knowledge and traditions to future generations.
Pay: $30.00-$35.00 per hour
