Legal Counsel 4 (Aboriginal Law)

Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid

Annual salary: $ 131,100.00 - 165,800.00

Position Highlights

We are looking for a full-time, practising lawyer focussed in the area of Aboriginal Law with at least 6 years post-call experience to join our in-house Legal Services team.

In this position, you will provide advice on legal obligations and consultation processes relating to BC Hydro projects and operations and support the negotiation, drafting and implementation of agreements with First Nations. You will also provide guidance regarding BC Hydro policies and practices to respond to new legal developments.

As an integral part of the Legal Services team, the successful candidate will join two senior in-house lawyers specialized in

Indigenous matters and work with a Legal Services team of more than 25 lawyers, including lawyers with specializations in public utility regulation, environmental, and properties matters.

What you'll do

As a member of the Legal Services team, you would:

- Advise on consultation processes with First Nations relating to BC Hydro projects, operations, energy planning,





commercial transactions, litigation and regulatory processes.
- Draft, review, and support negotiation of agreements with First Nations, including impact benefit agreements, relationship

agreements, and other commercial arrangements.
- Prepare and review submissions to regulatory agencies, including the British Columbia Utilities Commission, on matters

relating to First Nations and Aboriginal law.
- Support projects involving federal and provincial crown lands and First Nation reserve and treaty lands.
- Understand and effectively communicate BC Hydro's corporate values, priorities, operations, and risk tolerances.
- Communicate evolving legal and strategic risks through legal opinions, verbal advice, and briefing papers.
- Provide legal advice on complex, high-impact matters affecting BC Hydro's projects, operations, and relationships with

First Nations.
- Share knowledge and mentor lawyers and business partners on Aboriginal law matters.
- Work effectively with both in-house lawyers and external legal counsel.
- Manage external legal counsel and related budgets to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery of legal services.

What you bring

- You have knowledge of key principles relating to Aboriginal law and policy.
- You have practical experience consulting and building relationships with First Nations, and drafting agreements with First

Nation parties.
- You have strong legal drafting, writing, negotiating and people skills, and are able to communicate legal views concisely

and effectively to business groups.
- You are excellent at managing complex issues under time pressure.




- You are experienced working with business teams or subject matter experts and are able to consider corporate objectives,

operational needs and public policy when providing legal advice.
- You exercise sound judgment and are comfortable providing legal advice on complex, high-profile issues where legal,

business, operational, and reputational considerations must be balanced.
- You enjoy working in a team environment with colleagues and clients who are specialists in their field and foster a

productive and inclusive work workplace.
- You have a current membership (or eligibility for membership) in the Law Society of British Columbia, plus a minimum of 6

years of legal experience, either in-house or with a law firm.
- Experience with the acquisition and management of property rights relating to First Nations’ reserves and treaty lands is

considered an asset. Candidates with lesser experience may be considered if that experience has been focused on Indigenous matters. We will not be accepting applications from articling students.
