Role Overview
Our client is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to act as an infrastructure "mechanic" to build, standardize, and automate a fairly new, net-new Databricks platform on Microsoft Azure from the ground up. The core mission of this role is to design the underlying cloud architecture and governance that will support large, multitenant enterprise teams. In your first 6-12 months, you will make an immediate impact by heavily automating the setting using Terraform, making the platform production-ready, and ensuring highly scalable, secure deployments across the enterprise Data & AI landscape.
Main Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction across Azure and Databricks, specifically focusing on advanced Azure networking/security architecture and Databricks platform governance.
- Design and develop reusable Terraform modules to consistently and scalably provision Azure native resources and Databricks workspaces.
- Implement robust CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and analytics workloads utilizing Terraform, Docker, and Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve platform performance issues promptly to meet strict SLOs, leading major incident response and root-cause analysis.
- Deploy advanced logging and observability solutions, standardizing ingestion to Log Analytics and building custom alerting to reduce Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR).
- Mentor junior engineers on cloud best practices, promoting a strong culture of automation, documentation, and continuous learning.
Must-have required skills and experience
- 10 to 15+ years of overall IT experience operating within large, highly regulated enterprise environments (Banking & Financial Services preferred).
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, specifically requiring deep knowledge of Azure networking (VNets, Private Endpoints, NSGs, UDRs, Azure Firewall).
- 5+ years of experience administering Databricks on Azure, with an absolute must-have requirement of Unity Catalog administration.
- 5+ years of experience building and deploying Infrastructure as Code (IaC), strictly utilizing Terraform (Terraform modules, Terraform Cloud/Enterprise).
- 5+ years of CI/CD automation experience (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) and container technologies (Docker, AKS).
- A proven background as an infrastructure builder (a "mechanic") who sets up platforms, rather than a Data Engineer (a "driver") who solely uses the platform to build data pipelines.
Nice-to-have skills
- Experience with ARM/Bicep for Infrastructure as Code.
- Scripting and development experience utilizing Go.
Logistics & Compensation
- Location/Work Mode: Hybrid - 3 days per week on-site (with the potential to move to 4 days) in a downtown Toronto core office.
- Employment Type: Full-time.
- Compensation: $120,000 - $150,000+ base salary (commensurate with level and experience), plus a 10%-12% target performance bonus.
