Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid) About Captain Current Captain Current is building the next generation of marine intelligence for anglers, boaters, sailors, and anyone who spends time on the water. Weather forecasts, wind reports, tide charts, buoy observations, marine warnings, local knowledge, fishing reports… the information exists, but making sense of it takes time and experience.

Whether that’s finding the best fishing window, avoiding deteriorating conditions, or simply deciding whether today is a good day to head out, we’re building software that helps people spend more time enjoying the water and less time second-guessing their plans. ⸻ The Role We’re looking for a Software Engineer to help build the platform from the ground up.

You’ll work across our back-end services, APIs, and data processing systems, helping transform large amounts of environmental and marine data into reliable, scalable products. This is a role for someone who enjoys building things that matter. You’ll have real ownership, work closely with the rest of the engineering team, and help shape both the platform and the way we build software.

Designing and building back-end services and APIs.

Integrating external weather, marine, environmental, and mapping data.

Building reliable data ingestion and processing pipelines.

Improving performance, scalability, and system reliability.

Writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code.

Reviewing pull requests and helping teammates succeed.

Participating in architectural discussions and technical decision-making.

Improving our CI/CD pipelines and engineering tooling.

Monitoring production systems and solving problems when they arise.

Working closely with product and data teams to turn ideas into dependable software.



No two weeks will look exactly the same, and that’s part of what makes an early-stage company exciting. ⸻ What We’re Looking For You don’t need to check every box, but we’re looking for someone with a solid engineering foundation and a genuine curiosity for building good software. Ideally, you have:

A strong understanding of Computer Science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, and system design.

Experience building production back-end applications.

Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Go, Python, Java, C#, Kotlin, Rust, or similar.

Experience designing and building APIs.

Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.

Familiarity with Git, automated testing, and CI/CD.

Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.

The ability to work independently while collaborating closely with a small team.

Good written and verbal communication skills. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is welcome, but equivalent practical experience matters just as much. ⸻ Nice to Have Experience with some of the following is a bonus:
