As a hybrid employment/litigation role, Senior Counsel supports the legal and compliance requirements of the business by providing expert employment and litigation (primarily tort) advice, managing complex matters and developing best practices within the Legal team.

This role may also involve leading cross-functional initiatives and educating internal stakeholders on legal matters.

What you'll do...

- Senior Counsel creates and builds labour and employment capabilities within the Legal team for this area of legal expertise, ensuring significant cross-functional impact. This role involves achieving clear objectives and key results (OKRs) for the legal domain, while staying current with legislative, legal, and regulatory changes. Regular updates, summaries, and analyses of these changes are provided to key stakeholders
- Senior Counsel will also be responsible for the handling of various tort litigation matters (e.g. occupiers' liability, product liability, false arrest, and professional negligence).
- Senior Counsel educates and trains business units on legal and compliance requirements, often in partnership with business stakeholders and compliance teams. This includes planning, developing, and delivering internal education to the Legal team and broader business on specialized legal areas and topics as well as developing/maintaining a comprehensive knowledge bank of training materials and related documentation.
- Senior Counsel builds best-in-class processes and templates to mitigate risk, reduce costs,



and improve efficiency.
- Senior Counsel manages complex legal matters, negotiates, drafts legal documents, and provides ongoing legal advice to business units. The role also involves representing the company and/or managing external counsel in legal proceedings before civil courts, administrative tribunals, or other regulatory bodies as required. Additionally, the position supports cross-functional initiatives through the provision of legal and business advice, effectively managing external counsel when engaged.
- Senior Counsel identifies and implements effective ways of working both within and outside the legal department, ensuring alignment on overall legal strategies and approaches.

Qualifications :

- 7+ years of labour and employment law experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department dealing with a variety of labour & employment matters, including human rights matters. Experience in occupational health and safety matters would be an asset.
- Tort and/or commercial litigation experience would be an asset.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to prioritize competing demands.
- Strong business acumen and interpersonal skills

Licensing & Other Qualifications:

- LL.B/J.D. and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
