About Ashby
Ashby is a fast‑growing startup building top‑level talent‑acquisition software. We work closely with product and design teams and encourage ownership, minimal process, and focused engineering.
About the Role
We’re seeking a versatile, persistent product engineer who can build reusable building blocks across the entire stack and take end‑to‑end ownership of product features. The role requires collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to research, spec, prototype, and ship high‑quality product enhancements at a rapid pace.
Responsibilities
- Own large parts of a product and ship end‑to‑end features.
- Research competitors, write product specifications, build wireframes, and translate research into concrete implementation.
- Design and implement reusable system components such as declarative filter architectures or automated interview scheduling engines.
- Collaborate with product, design, and infrastructure teams to integrate current features and maintain quality across the stack.
- Review code, give feedback, and ensure the highest engineering standards.
Qualifications
- Comfortable tackling any part of a technology stack: front‑end, back‑end, infrastructure.
- Experience with product‑and‑technical ambiguity, driving solutions through customer research and abstraction.
- Balance speed and quality; deliver high‑quality products within tight timelines.
- Ambitious self‑driver ready to own projects and seek continuous improvement.
- Excellent collaborator and communicator; coordinate with stakeholders and keep them informed.
- Proactive in creating tools or abstractions that increase leverage and reduce the amount of tedious work.
We’re Not Looking For
- Engineers who spend most of their time on project management or architecture reviews.
- Those who rely on strict process and structure such as sprint planning or well‑defined project management.
- Engineers who focus solely on new‑coding work; we expect a broad range of responsibilities across the stack.
- Use of leetcode or whiteboard programming as core exam method.
- Newcomers who require mentorship for all aspects of project ownership.
Interview Process
Our process focuses on collaboration and product thinking, not on coding challenges.
- Introduction call with Hiring Manager (15‑30 minutes).
- Technical screen with pair programming in our codebase (1 hour).
- Three non‑coding interviews covering product thinking, technical design, and infrastructure (about 3.5 hours, may span several days).
Technology Stack
Type Script (frontend & back‑end), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, Redis. Prior experience is not required; a love of typed languages is helpful.
Compensation
CA$173K – CA$326K.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and equity.
- 10‑year exercise window for stock options.
- Unlimited PTO; encouraged to take time off.
- Minimum 12‑week fully paid parental leave, extending for non‑US locations per regional requirements.
- Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
- US$100/month education budget; conference costs covered via manager approval.
- Full‑coverage health insurance in the US; high‑quality supplemental insurance for non‑US locations.
Equal Employment Opportunity
Ashby provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and abilities.
Hiring Process Transparency
Ashby is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. We confirm that this advertisement is for an active, existing vacancy within our organization.
