This position is ideal for entry-level candidates with a four-year degree in planning or a related discipline. Candidates with closely related education and experience are encouraged to apply, as well.





The position reports to the Director of Community Development and will work closely with a team of professionals in the town and with our public and private partners. The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal planning. The successful candidate will also possess excellent communication skills including competency in verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to maintain confidentiality, interpret state and local laws, and use logical thought processes to develop creative solutions.

They will also be a team player, interacting with multiple departments. A Bachelor's degree in planning, urban design, civil engineering or a related field; and minimal experience in planning, zoning administration, or community development; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required The Town of Woodstock, county seat of scenic Shenandoah County, has a growing population of about 6,000 and boasts a historic, charming, safe, and bustling community. It is the center for retail, professional services, healthcare, and dining for the surrounding area.

Woodstock is the fourth oldest town in Virginia and exemplifies the historic “main street” feel that many localities attempt to build. This is an FLSA non-exempt, at-will, full-time position, with occasional night meeting requirements. The hiring range is $52,674 - $63,209.





The successful applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screening. Qualifications General knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, urban design theory, and zoning; ability to assist with site plan review and to utilize computer-aided designs; ability to utilize geographic information systems; familiarity with grant application and monitoring processes; ability to communicate ideas effectively in both oral and written formats; ability to write professional and technical planning reports and papers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, developers, engineers/surveyors, governmental agency representatives, elected officials, attorneys and the general public; and the ability to maintain familiarization with current best practices in land use.

Special Requirements Certified Zoning

Official certification required within 3 years of hire. Possession of valid driver’s license.
