- POSITION OVERVIEW
- Job Title: Transborder and Ocean Import/Export Coordinator
- Department: Logistics / Supply Chain / International Trade
- Reports To: Logistics Manager / International Logistics Supervisor
- Location: Toronto
- JOB SUMMARY The Transborder and Ocean Import/Export Coordinator manages the end-to-end logistics, documentation, and compliance for international freight. This role handles cross-border ground transportation (transborder) and maritime shipping (ocean) for both inbound and outbound cargo. The ideal candidate ensures timely deliveries, optimizes shipping costs, maintains regulatory compliance, and provides exceptional customer service.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Shipment Coordination & Operations
- Space Booking: Reserve cargo space with ocean liners, freight forwarders, and cross-border trucking carriers.
- Milestone Tracking: Monitor and track milestone events for imports and exports from origin to final destination.
- Issue Resolution: Proactively resolve transit delays, equipment shortages, port congestion, and delivery disruptions.
- Inland Dispatch: Coordinate and dispatch inland carriers for container drayage and final-mile delivery.
Documentation & Compliance
- Paperwork Preparation: Generate crucial shipping documents including Bills of Lading (BOL/ocean BOL), Commercial Invoices, and Packing Lists.
- Customs Auditing: Audit customs paperwork to ensure accurate Harmonized System (HS) codes, country of origin, and valuations.
- Mandatory Filing: File necessary declarations such as Automated Export System (AES) or Automated Manifest System (AMS).
- Trade Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to international trade laws, customs regulations, and coast guard/maritime safety rules.
Financial & Vendor Management
- Rate Negotiation: Negotiate spot rates with carriers and freight forwarders to optimize freight spend.
Invoice Auditing: Audit carrier invoices against quoted rates to approve payments and resolve discrepancies.
- Client Billing: Issue billing invoices to clients promptly, including accurate accessorial charges (demurrage, detention, chassis fees).
Customer Service & Communication
- Status Updates: Provide real-time updates to internal stakeholders and external clients regarding shipment status.
- Logistics Advisory: Advise clients on optimal shipping routes, transit times, and cost-effective logistics solutions.
- Relationship Management: Maintain strong working relationships with customs brokers, steamship lines, and port authorities.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Required Education & Experience
- Experience: 2–4 years of direct experience handling ocean freight and transborder (truckload/LTL) logistics.
Technical & Industry Knowledge
- Global Trade: Deep understanding of Incoterms, ocean shipping terminology (FCL, LCL, NVOCC), and customs clearance processes.
Core Soft Skills
- Problem-Solving: Strong critical-thinking skills to react quickly and effectively to volatile supply chain disruptions.
- Organization: Exceptional attention to detail with the proven ability to manage dozens of active shipments simultaneously.
- Communication: Highly developed verbal and written communication skills for dealing with global vendors across diverse time zones.

- Setting: Standard office environment or hybrid-remote setup.
- Hours: Standard business hours, with occasional flexibility required to communicate with international agents in alternate time zones
