The Maintenance Technician – Generalist will oversee a wide range of repairs, for the University. These tasks include but are not limited to general carpentry, drywall repair, painting and preventative maintenance. This position will be responsible for a whole host of repairs and duties across the campus to help keep things running smoothly.

Key Areas of Accountability

Provide a wide range of repairs and installation with primary focus on plumbing fixtures, piping, valves, and plumbing system, while also supporting repairs on different fixtures and fittings including furniture, doors and windows.

Inspect work sites to determine necessary repairs, methods of repair, and tools/supplies needed.

Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary and storm drainage, fixtures, valves, pumps, and associated components.

Respond to plumbing-related service requests such as leaks, blockages, fixture failures, pressure issues, and water quality concerns.

Conduct inspections of plumbing systems to identify deficiencies, preventative maintenance needs, and potential failures.

Install and finish drywall with mud and tape to paint readiness.

Perform skilled generalist work in the maintenance, repair, remodeling and alteration of building structures and facilities according to work orders or verbal instructions by using hand and power tools such as saws, hammers, chisels, levels, drills, presses, sanders, table saws, joiners, planers, wood lathes, and mortising machines to repair doors, windows, window frames, floors, walls, ceilings, partitions, and office furniture.

Install finished hardware such as door locks, hinges, door checks; install floor coverings such as linoleum and carpet tile: paint, construct minor buildings or small additions to existing structures.

Work on roofs to complete roof inspections and preventative maintenance by removing debris and branches from roof surfaces and gutters.

Maintain familiarity with terminology of the trade and technical experience in the application of normal trade materials.

Contribute to an accident-free work environment by complying with operator's instructions for the use of power tools, wearing protective equipment such as goggles, hearing protectors, back supports, and work gloves,



reporting incidents of unsafe work activity to supervisors, and following standard safety precautions during work..

Provide on-call support to the Maintenance team to respond to urgent needs that may arise at the University after regular hours as needed

Contribute to the overall success of the Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned (e.g. snow removal)

Perform basic electrical maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, fixtures, switches, and outlet covers, and reporting more complex electrical issues to licensed electricians, in accordance with safety guidelines.

Provide support to other disciplines in maintenance as required.

Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated skill and knowledge of the tools required to complete position responsibilities. Skill and knowledge of safe workplace practices in a broad range of general maintenance expectations. Skill in self-motivation and personal initiative and holds themselves accountable for personal actions and responsibilities.

Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical lifting of machinery and parts.

Able to make independent decisions and use sound judgment in applying TWU policies, rules, and regulations.

Multi-tasker who is used to fast paced environment.

Regularly and climb ladders while working and moving.

Able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

Ability to operate mobile equipment including forklifts, boom-lifts, scissor lifts etc. considered an asset.

Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Able to stand most of the day.

Must have valid driver’s license.

Carry on call phone after hours on a rotational basis.

Able to be on call for Snow removal when required evenings and weekends.

Standards & Requirements

Education

Grade 12 required.



Formal post-secondary training/apprenticeship in carpentry would be an asset but not required.

Experience

5-6 years in maintenance and generalist-related work. Previous work experience in a post-secondary or other educational environment is an asset.
