RB Engineering Ltd. is a full-service electrical engineering firm located in Nanaimo, BC, the hub city for Vancouver Island. We are proud to be a Vancouver Island employee-owned and operated company. We offer a full suite of services to facilitate the complete construction project life cycle including conceptual planning, detailed design, tender, construction, and on-site testing/commissioning. Our project experience includes design-build projects; fully tendered designs for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings; transportation systems including signals and street lighting; and complete marine/industrial power, communications, and control systems.

Our staff is currently comprised of 15 technical and administrative employees that work cohesively as a team. We are a mixture of married couples and singles, people with and without kids, and people with and without pets.

The Location

Nanaimo is a marine town with a population of 112,000 centrally located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, which offers the ‘big city’ perks with a ‘small town’ soul.

If the outdoors is your passion, then Nanaimo can offer fishing, boating, sailing, hiking, camping, kayaking, and mountain biking. There is also easy access to Mt Washington Ski Resort for downhill and cross-country skiing.

If shopping is your thing, Nanaimo’s downtown core and multiple malls offer access to all the big box stores as well as locally run gems. Arts and culture are ever present with Nanaimo’s new Port Theatre, local venues, and multiple annual festivals.





Vancouver is only a ferry or float plane ride away for a Canucks game or a weekend in the big city. Nanaimo is a nice and welcoming place to live with all of the amenities of a big city but with the option to enjoy a quieter life.

The Position

We are currently looking for an Electrical Designer for residential, institutional, marine, and commercial building projects. The role is suitable for EITs, Technicians or Technologists who have a practical mind and enjoy working in an office environment most of the time. Project work would involve aspects from several branches of electrical design including:

1. Collaborating with Project Managers to develop construction document packages and reports.

2. Supporting lead Engineers in planning, studies, and assessments.

3. Conducting site reviews to assess and document existing conditions.

4. Electrical designs of power distribution, life safety, lighting, security, and communication systems; prepare engineering studies and design calculations.

5. Coordinating with utilities (BC Hydro, Telus & Rogers) for new service requirements.

6. Collaborating with Architects, Interior Designers, Mechanical Engineers, and other professionals.

7. Carrying out construction reviews of, and commissioning for, systems that you have designed.

We are seeking someone with the right mindset and aptitude, who is prepared to embark on a life in Nanaimo, or the surrounding area.



We will provide on the job training/mentoring specific to our industry and will assist in obtaining your professional designation, as required.

Required Qualifications:

1. Passion for electrical systems, devices, and construction. Ideally you: (a) have been taking electrical devices apart since you were a child to see how they work, (b) undertake some residential wiring on your own in your own home, (c) work on electronic, wood working, or auto mechanic projects just for the fun of it.

2. Degree in electrical engineering or two-year diploma in electrical technology.

3. Completely fluent in the English language, spoken and written.

4. Capable user of AutoCAD, PCs and Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

5. Either living in the Nanaimo Area or a desire to live and build a life here.

6. Minimum of 1 year work experience in the electrical industry or equivalent co-op/internship experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience with BC Building Code (BCBC), and Canadian Electrical Code (CEC)

2. Experience with building systems

3. Eligible for professional registration with EGBC or ASTTBC.

Salary: $30 - $35 per hour
