ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Swift Current is seeking a dedicated and dependable individual to join Infrastructure & Operations as a permanent Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Operator. This position supports an essential public service and plays a critical role in protecting community health by ensuring the delivery of safe, reliable, and regulatory‑compliant potable water. Reporting to the Superintendent of Water Treatment, the WTP Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining water treatment processes and systems that the community relies on every day. This role requires careful attention to detail, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to safety, accuracy, and established procedures.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Operate and monitor WTP processes to ensure the supply of safe, compliant potable water in accordance with the Water Treatment Plant Permit to Operate.
- Collect representative samples; complete laboratory tests; analyze results; and adjust processes and chemical dosages as required.
- Monitor flows, pressures, alarms, and instrumentation; document readings; and maintain accurate operational records.
- Respond to call-outs and perform operational troubleshooting, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.




- Complete cleaning and housekeeping duties to maintain a safe and productive work environment.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on WTP equipment (e.g., pumps, valves, motors, hydraulics, instrumentation) and remote station buildings and equipment.
- Complete regulatory bacteriological sampling and support compliance reporting requirements.
- Inspect, check, and maintain boosters, reservoirs, and transfer stations.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Grade 12 diploma required; Grade 12 chemistry or post‑secondary coursework is an asset.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 kilograms, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must successfully complete Office of Water Programs – Sacramento State Water Treatment Levels 1 and 2 and obtain Class 1 Water Treatment Operator Certification within 18 months of hire.
- Must be progressively working toward a Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board (OCB) Class IV Certification in Water Treatment and Distribution.
- Knowledge and experience in the operation of pumps, valves, motors, hydraulics, and instrumentation.
- Mechanical aptitude required to perform maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant and remote station buildings and equipment.
- Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use email, word processing,



and computerized operational systems.
- Preference given to candidates with Water Treatment and or Water Distribution Certification.
- Successful completion of related post‑secondary training or a water‑related technology course from a recognized institution.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required prior to employment.
- A satisfactory driver’s abstract is required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
- Continued possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence is required.
- The ability to participate in shift work, call‑back, overtime, and stand‑by duty, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
- The successful candidate must be able to respond to the Water Treatment Plant within a 20‑minute response time and is expected to reside within the City of Swift Current.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

COMPENSATION

The City of Swift Current offers a competitive compensation package including a full employee benefit package. The hourly wage range is listed below and is in accordance with City of Swift Current - CUPE 183 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Pay rates based on Level of Certification

- Uncertified Operator: First year $26.55 – thereafter $27.41
- Class 1 Operator: First year $29.14 – thereafter $30.28
- Class 2 Operator: First year $31.45 – thereafter $32.60
- Class 3 Operator: First year $34.36 – thereafter $35.69
- Class 4 Operator: First year $38.83 – thereafter $40.27
