BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF) is seeking an energetic, organized, and adaptable person to fill a quick-paced role helping to manage invasive species which threaten our local ecosystems and assist with conservation lands maintenance. The ideal candidate will possess both work and lived experience in the natural environment and enjoy working in stewardship and conservation. This role ideally includes education and experience in the environmental sector.
The individual brings a positive can-do attitude to the job, as well as a willingness to learn, adapt and respond quickly while maintaining a high standard of attention to detail. The Conservation and restoration technician position reports to the Program Manager, Ducks Unlimited Canada and Regional Coordinator, BCCF.
Responsibilities
- Mapping of invasive Spartina spp.
with the use of ESRI Software
- Identification of estuary vegetation (ID Training provided)
- Manual removal of Invasive species on Vancouver Island, the gulf islands, and seal islets
- Assistance with monitoring and research efforts on Spartina spp. treatment
- Record keeping of daily activities and end of season reporting
- Outreach to the general public
- Water control structure maintenance and beaver dam removal
- Site inspections, which may involve interactions with landowners
- Vegetation and dyke maintenance
- General labour related to conservation lands management
Mandatory Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must meet the Canada Summer Job criteria as follows –
- Between 15 and 30 years of age.
- A Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or someone who has been officially granted refugee protection in Canada and legally entitled to work in Canada (which means you must have a valid Social Insurance Number).
These criteria are set by the funding source for the project and therefore we cannot hire anyone that does not meet the eligibility criteria.
The applicant must be
- Be available for the entire work term.
- Complete a criminal record check.
Technicians are required to provide their own personal outdoor work gear for working in a wet and muddy environment.
This includes items such as: work boots, rain gear and sun protection. Any protective safety gear required for the tasks will be provided. Due to the nature of this work, the technicians must be physically fit and able to do physical work all day long including digging and lifting approximately 50lbs. The working environment of the mudflats is demanding on the body, especially on the joints of the knee and ankle.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working or volunteering outdoors in all weather conditions
- Proven ability to work in a team environment with a high attention to detail
- Pursuing or holding a post-secondary degree or diploma in the natural sciences, ideally working towards a degree in natural resource conservation, habitat restoration, ecology, and/or invasive species management
Skills:
- general waterfowl and plant ID
- Plant identification, especially native and invasive salt marsh species
- Data collection and management
- Experience working, volunteering, or recreating in challenging terrain
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping technologies and applications
Assets
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping technologies and applications
- Previous coordination or leadership experience
- Experience in environmental or community outreach
- WorkSafeBC Basic first aid (formerly OFA Level 1)
