Forest Resource Inventory Field Technician– Seasonal contract

n

NWES is currently looking to hire an enthusiastic Forest Resource Inventory Field Technician to assist with the delivery of the Vegetation Sampling Network (VSN) program. The successful applicant will be based out of the Thunder Bay area with fieldwork based out of Armstrong in the Wabadowgang Noopming Forest. This position has the potential for extension past the summer field season provided the candidate is suitable and workload allows.

This position has a preferred start date of May 11, 2026 , but is versatile.

n

What can I expect to do in this role?

n

Participate in fieldwork associated with the VSN program, including tasks such as:

n

· Conducting plot-level assessments including tree species identification, DBH and height measurements, and stand-level assessments (e.g., canopy structure, disturbance, forest health)

n

· Performing tree mapping and crown delineation, including measuring tree position and crown dimensions

n

· Completing site and soil assessments using augers and soil pits (e.g., measuring horizons, texturing, collecting soil samples, and determining ecosites)

n

· Identifying and assessing boreal vegetation (trees, shrubs, herbs, mosses, lichens)

n

· Collecting data using high-precision GPS units, Vertexes, 360° cameras, rangefinders, and other equipment

n

· Performing office-related tasks such as data entry, physical sample verification, and reporting

n

Mandatory Qualifications

n· Familiarity with common boreal forest plants, and experience conducting vegetation and soil surveysn

· Familiarity with Ontario’s Forest Resource Inventory

n





· Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and manual labour, often requiring prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, digging, and carrying up to 30lbs

n

· Demonstrated experience and comfort travelling and working in the field, including in remote locations and willingness to spend extended periods of time away.

n

· A desire and demonstrated ability to work independently or lead a field crew

n

· Willingness to work long hours under variable field conditions (in inclement weather, heat and cold weather conditions) as well as work on weekends and/or statutory holidays.

n

· Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.

n

· Possession of a small craft operators’ certificate and ATV training would be an asset.

n

Desirable Qualifications: Note that applicants are NOT required to meet ALL desirable qualifications. On-the-job training will be provided. All interested persons are encouraged to apply.

Practical Skills and Education

n· 1-2 seasons conducting forestry or environmental related field workn

· Experience with Vegetation Sampling Network Protocol or similar forest inventory sampling

n

· Experience with Ecological Land Classification and the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System or other provincial equivalent an asset.

n

· Valid Class G driver’s licence.

n





· Experience living and/or working on the land in northern Ontario.

n

· Some post-secondary education in forestry or natural resource-related fields.

n

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to work off hours, long days (bank time), with changes of routine and schedule.

n

Organizational and Problem-Solving Skills

n

· Complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines.

n

· Ability to make adjustments to field plans when needed and work efficiently

n

· Identify and alert others to problems/issues as well as emergency or safety situations associated with fieldwork.

n

Communication and Computer Skills

n· You are proficient with computer programs such as regular office hardware and software, and programs such as GIS, GPS and navigation software.n

· Use of field tablets and georeferencing cameras for data entry, navigation, and data management

n

· Follow verbal and written instructions.

n

· Interact with colleagues and be courteous and respectful to clients.

n

· Experience with GPS/InReach is an asset.

n

Position Type:nContract

nLocation:nThunder Bay with travel to field sites throughout northern Ontario (Armstrong).n

Key Requirements:nA valid Class G driver’s license, and ability to work remotely, including accommodation in field stations.

Salary:nHourly, to be negotiated based on training and experience
