Caregiver Opportunity – Johnstown, Ontario (Rural, Near Prescott) Schedule: Tuesday & Thursday, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM (3 hours/visit) Location: Johnstown, ON (between Cardinal and Johnstown, near Prescott — approx. 25 min from Brockville)

- ️ Important Note — Dementia & Approach to Care: This client has mixed dementia (Alzheimer's and vascular) and has recently lost his driver's licence, which has been a significant adjustment. He has valuable days and difficult days. The right caregiver needs to come in as a helper and companion — not as someone who is visibly "there to take care of him." A natural, low-key approach will be essential to building trust and making visits work.

About the Client: This role supports an elderly man living with his wife in a rural riverside property near Johnstown, Ontario. He was recently diagnosed with mixed dementia following a major cardiac event earlier this year, though signs of cognitive decline had been present for some time before that. His wife is his primary caregiver and is becoming overwhelmed — the family's primary goal right now is to give her regular, meaningful respite while also keeping him engaged and active.

He has mixed dementia (Alzheimer's and vascular) — he experiences confusion, agitation, and memory lapses, but also has strong days where he appears largely himself. He recently lost his driver's licence, which has been hard on him. He is used to being independent and active. He enjoys hands-on, practical activity — fixing things, outdoor projects, working with his hands. He responds well to a helper dynamic rather than a caregiver dynamic.



He may need occasional reminders to shower and maintain personal hygiene, but full personal care is not currently required. His wife lives in the home and the caregiving role is largely about giving her a break and keeping him occupied and engaged. His stepchildren and biological children are coordinating care together — biological children hold power of attorney. A male caregiver may be a better fit given his personality and the nature of the activities. The property is rural and on the river — reliable personal transportation to this location is required.

Responsibilities:

Companionship and social engagement — spending genuine time with the client; conversation, shared activity, and being a natural presence in the home Hands-on activity support — engaging the client in practical tasks he enjoys such as yard work, light outdoor projects, or fixing things around the property Cognitive engagement — observing and gently supporting cognitive function through activity; noting how the client performs day-to-day tasks and flagging any changes Hygiene reminders — prompting the client to shower or maintain personal care as needed, done naturally and without confrontation Caregiver relief — being present so the client's wife can step away and have uninterrupted time to herself Wellness monitoring — observing mood, behaviour,



and cognition each visit and communicating any concerns to the family

What We're Looking For:

PSW certification or equivalent experience in personal support or companion care Experience working with clients who have dementia — essential Natural, easy-going, and practical — this client needs someone who blends in as a helper, not someone who presents as a formal caregiver Comfortable with hands-on, outdoor, and activity-based engagement — sitting and watching TV will not work for this client Patient and adaptable — the client can be confused or agitated on difficult days; emotional resilience is important Male caregiver preferred given the client's personality and activity preferences Reliable personal transportation to a rural location near Johnstown/Prescott Located in or near Brockville, Prescott, or surrounding area

Schedule: Tuesday & Thursday, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM (3 hours/visit). The family is in the early planning phase and needs to confirm with the client's power of attorney before committing. Care is needed as soon as possible to provide regular respite for the client's wife.
