About Town House Glace Bay Citizen’s Service League
Established in 1967, Glace Bay Citizens Service League is a volunteer based non-profit, charitable organization which offers programs that improve the quality of life in Glace Bay and surrounding areas, in response to needs identified by residents.
Position Overview
The Lawn Care Summer Student is responsible for supporting Town House’s Enhanced Community & Home Options for Seniors (ECHOS) lawn care program. This will include lawn and grounds maintenance (grass cutting, gardening, yard clean-up) for program participants and Town House.
Our ideal candidate makes safety a priority. Friendliness and the ability to effectively communicate with seniors is essential, as well as willingness to work independently and have a sense of humour.
Primary Job Functions
- Performing grounds maintenance, which may include mowing, weeding, watering flower beds and planters, general upkeep of the grounds, picking up debris, planting shrubs and flowers and adding mulch.
- Maintaining all equipment and tools and ensuring they’re stored away correctly.
- Using positive judgment with safety as a priority including willingness to wear PPE.
- Having the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Maintaining daily journal of work performed.
- Driving Town House truck with utility trailer.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. (Note: International students are not eligible, even if they have a work permit.)
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the position with regard to lawn care, material and furniture handling, painting, etc. Physical requirements include frequent walking, bending, standing for long periods, pushing, pulling, twisting, stretching, climbing stairs, and lifting items 20-50 pounds and assisting in 2-person lifts in excess of 100 pounds
- Current WHIMIS and Emergency First Aid certification considered an asset but can be provided
- Effective communication skills for the purpose of data relay, exchange, feedback, and clarification
- Prior experience with lawn maintenance considered an asset
- Priority will be given to candidates with a valid Nova Scotia class 5 drivers license for at least 9 years, a clean drivers abstract, and the ability to maneuver and back up a short utility trailer in tight spaces.
Requirements
- Requires ability to stand up to 3-7 hours per day with frequent walking, standing, bending, squatting, pulling and pushing.
- Requires ability to keyboard at computer for up to 1-2 hours per day.
- May be required to lift items 20-50 pounds and assist in 2-person lifts in excess of 100 pounds
- Arrange own transportation.
- Successful criminal record check and vulnerable sector search
Compensation and Hours
$17.50/ hour for 35 hours/ week
8 weeks of summer employment under Canada Summer Jobs Grant
Hours of operation are from 9-4 M-F
