Position Details

Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency | Department of Finance

Responding to the needs of government as well as other external clients, the Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency (NLSA) provides key social and economic information to decision makers. The NLSA ensures data achieves a quality acceptable to produce official government statistics and that data is accurate and unbiased for evidence-based decision making.

The Statistician II is responsible for qualified statistical work comprising of data development, manipulation, organization, and proofing of statistical data sets required for special projects, policy development and the evaluation of programs and services. This position will assist in the design and implementation of statistical and economic technical/methodological processes for large data sets. The incumbent will perform vital data quality checks on raw data received and transform raw data into statistical cross tabulations using SPSS/Excel. This position is accountable for ensuring information produced meets all data quality, privacy, and confidentiality requirements under the Statistics Agency Act prior to public release. Other related duties as required.

Screening Criteria




University Degree in Statistics, Mathematics or Economics (or a relevant combination of education and experience)
Experience with Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and other statistical programs
Experience conducting statistical research and data analysis
Experience technical and report writing

Assessment Criteria
Knowledge of theories, concepts, and methods in the field of statistics, including statistical research, data collection, dissemination and probability-based sampling methods, usage, and application
Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and other statistical programs
Knowledge of statistical calculations to identify trends, patterns, and relationships in data
Technical and report writing skills
Ability to think critically
Ability to manage time and tasks
Ability to effectively exchange information
