Job Summary The Staff Controls Engineer is a seasoned professional that performs system maintenance and support, leads well‑defined projects, assists with development of policies and procedures, interacts with internal and external teams, and mentors junior engineers.
Responsibilities System Operation and Work Practices
Expert operating knowledge of control systems, including advanced diagnostics and repairs
Apply Equinix processes and procedures and industry standards to resolve diverse issues
Utilize safe working practices at an expert level (e.g., apply lockout/tagout, explain MSDS)
Evaluate and ensure safe working practices of others
Interact with other engineering disciplines
Problem Solving
Consistently solve cross‑functional issues requiring initiative
Recommend and implement system‑level enhancements to eliminate potential problems
Test suitability of components for deployments
Internal/External Contact
Support mentoring of junior team members
Direct internal and external project team members
Direct teams per project or initiative (e.g., general contractors, design teams, commissioning agents, equipment suppliers)
Communicate at an expert level, including SOP development and technical writing
Exchange information between departments
Provide executive‑level communications in standardized templates if required
Technical Expertise
Full understanding of typical electrical, fire protection, and HVAC system operation including optimization strategies and common deficiencies
Expert controls system knowledge, usually confined to specific brands
Act as subject‑matter expert to group members
Present at internal and/or external engineering seminars and conferences
Training
Acquire knowledge through experience, vendor training, and shadowing
Serve as SME for certain systems and train others inside and outside the group
Develop Policy/Methods
Participate in review of policy and procedure documents
Assess Adherence to Policy
Ensure adherence to standards and policy through documentation review, commissioning activities, and data center physical inspections
Qualifications
Typically 5+ years in control system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning; controls specialization preferred
Fluency in French and English required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related discipline (preferred)
Experience in highly automated environments (automotive, semiconductors, high‑volume manufacturing), data center technical engineering, and operations support preferred
Knowledge of electrical, HVAC controls, and fire protection systems
Ability to lead complex system troubleshooting, upgrades, commissioning, and vendor evaluations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French
