About the Gig
RentAHuman matches top creative and technical minds with the AI labs doing the most interesting work right now. We're based in San Francisco, and our work has been covered in Forbes, Business Insider, and Nature.
The Role: Expert Mathematician Type: Contract Pay: $50–$90/hour Where: Remote Time Commitment: At least 10 hours/week
What you'll actually be doing
- Writing original math problems that go beyond rote computation and actually probe how well someone understands a concept. Questions need to be tight — no ambiguity, no missing context.
- Tagging each one by difficulty: Medium (early undergrad), Hard (upper-division undergrad), or Expert (grad school and beyond).
- For each question, giving us one correct answer plus nine wrong ones that look right at first glance. The distractors should be good enough to trip up someone who really knows their stuff.
- Laying out the full solution as a step-by-step Chain-of-Thought in markdown — clear reasoning, no skipped steps, no filler.
- Citing 1–5 solid academic sources per question. Think peer-reviewed journals, university repositories, that kind of thing.
- On verification work: catching problems with a question's clarity, completeness, precision, or whether it's even solvable, and explaining any changes you make.
Who we're looking for
Need to have:
- A PhD (or PhD candidate) in math, applied math, stats, or something close. We'll consider a master's if you've gone genuinely deep in a particular area.
- A robust handle on grad-level math and formal proofs.
- Clean, clear written English — you can explain complicated ideas without losing the reader.
Nice to have:
- Background in writing rigorous problem sets or math competition problems.
